Anybody with fungus farming experience - my cakes are developing dark powdery areas underneath the caps. Is this normal or contams? Maybe spores dropping ? Help me out here - I've come too far to flop now...

Take a look at pictures 17 & 18 in this sequence: http://www.pahlow.net/albums/shrooms In 17 there is a bigg shroom at the bottom of the pic. After harvest in 18 there is a black powder on the perlite where the shroom was. These are just spores dropped by the shroom. Could that be what you're seeing?

Bob is correct. Once the caps open, they will start to drop spores almost immediately. The tipoff is that this deposit will be directly under opened caps, and not under immature specimens. You will also notice a fine dusting of this powder on the pebbles of perlite. At first glance the powder seems black, but in sunlight you can tell that it is actually a very very deep purple, or purplish-brown. Almost black, but not quite. Nothing to worry about, although most folks try to harvest before the spores start dropping, because even though the spores themselves are not a problem, they make it harder to detect developing patches of other contams at the earliest stage. pinky

I recall reading, as Pinky points out, the optimum time to harvest is just as the membrane or skirt attaching the the cap to the stem starts to tear. You've got to stay on top of it though. Once they start to open, they do so quickly.

Yeah...especially when you are on your way to work. They will start opening just a teeny bit, and you think...ah, it'll be fine until I get home. Then you get home and you got purple fairy dust everywhere, lol. Have to hire a shroom sitter Mast

Mucho gracias, amigos. This is exactly what I'm seeing. Guess I'm ready to boogie! Came off the verap a little suddenly, I guess - now I know what a heroin junkie feels like going cold-turkey. Have slept maybe 6 hrs total last 4 nights; am at work today thru some kinda Herculean/superhuman effort. Should be getting double-time & 1/2...TGIF!

Good luck with the boogie, Gtarman, it's much better than "the dance." And don't forget to tell us how it goes. -tommyD
