Neurontin Question
« on: Jun 18th, 2002, 7:27am »

My Neuro just put me on Neurontin for the first time. After Lithium, Verapamil, Keppra, Prednisone, Amerge and Topamax have failed.....its on to the next drug.

Anyway, I was just wondering, for anyone who has used it, how long does it take Neurontin to kick in?  I started to taking 900 mgs yesterday and have had 4 7-9 kippers since.  When can I expect some relief?

Thanks in advance for any help.

For us chronics nothing much works as a preventive. I tried most of the drugs that you did and ended up on Neurontin.  It didn't work at all.  I have been having some success with baclofen, it does not prevent CH but it does make them lighter and less often, and you even get a month or two of remission from time to time.  If neurontin fails ask your doctor about baclofen.

From my understanding, it takes Neurontin and other preventative drugs the better part of a month to really get into your system.  It's really hard to say.  A lot of times doctors will prescribe prednisone in addition to a new med to help pass the time until the new med starts working.  The only thing that saved me until my cycle broke / meds started working (can't really tell what happened, because you never truly know with CH) was Imitrex injections and the imitrex tip from this website.

Neurontin worked for me at 900 MG the first time I took it, and as I remember, it worked fairly quickly.  However, I'm episodic, not chronic, and I don't have a lot of knowledge about what chronic sufferers do.  I hope you find something that works for you!

Wasn't sure about answering this cuz I'm episodic too....Last cycle was put on Neurontin.  My cycle was notiably shorter.  Have read some posts around here that lead me to believe that this has been the case for others who have used Neurontin.  Lots of people say it worked and worked great.  Only thing, they had to keep increasing the dose to maintain success.............
Not sure....

Neurontin is an anti seizure med.  And, like lots of similar meds, you get the whole kit and kaboodle....

I tend to think if it's gonna help out, you'll know by the way your headaches are comin and going...............

Wish you luck!

Chronic;

Yep, Kim's got it right.  My hubby started on nuerontin 4 years ago, completely skipped a couple of cycles and had a couple of others that were shorter and/or less intense.  He IS episodic also, though.  But he kept having to increase the dose to keep getting it to help.  Finally got off of it this year because at 4800 mg per day, the side affects of depression, anxiety and insomnia were getting too bad.

Hard to say how long it took it to work, as he started on it 2 months before he was due to start a cycle (he skipped it).

Hope you are pf soon!
