Going into my 21st week in cycle and haven't had a break since my pred burst in January. Nothing seems to work.
Talked to the neuro this a.m. He is giving me another course of pred just to give me a break and in the meantime he has prescribed Inderal. 10mg 3X per day today 20mg 3xper day tomorrow and then 60mg daily thereafter.
I tried to search this site for inderal but no luck.
Can anyone out there tell me if they've used it or are currently using it. Does it work? How bad are the side effects.

I was prescribed Inderal, didn't work for me, get your doc to prescride O2 try it, no side effects, just don't smoke while its on

Thanks for the info. I did run across the old messages and have read them.
One thing concerns me greatly. Sounds like inderal is prescribed to chronics. Long-term use and all that. Does my neuro now think I'm chronic and hasn't told me? I still like to believe that I'm episodic. Haven't given up that hope yet and don't think I want to.

Truthfully Inderal is usually prescribed for migraines as it has a very poor track record for CH. I think I've seen only one person, Charlie I think, who said it helped his headaches.

Propranolol HCl (brand name: Inderal) is a beta blocker, commonly used for heart diseases and high blood pressure. But it is also used with quite some success as a preventative for migraines. Although it is sometimes prescribed (by not so up to date doctors) as a preventative for CH, it has only a very low success rate for clusterheads.
But a drug in the same class is very useful as a preventative for clusters: the calcium channel blocker Verapamil (sold under 50 different brand names). The way to success with Verapamil lies in a high enough dose: For heart diseases hardly ever a dose above 240 mg is prescribed, but here only starts the useful range for CH. According to Dr Goadsby the dose can be increased up to 920 mg / day if necessary. He also recommends the standard release version.

I'm sorry to hear that you think my doc is not so up to date. I have been getting that same feeling lately but tried to deny it. I have been seeing this neuro since January and when I first saw him he had all the info available on ch. Maybe I should have asked him how dated his material was. I have tried to push the verap but he keeps overruling me and I'm not a confrontational person so I keep getting pushed around.
I live in a very rural area and I feel lucky just to have this neuro close by. However, I think I might just have to start thinking about traveling alittle bit further to get decent treatment.
Or, in the alternative, I need to print out some info on the meds on this site and fax to him.

I just started O2 treatment y. esterday--So far so good, the pain goes away in 5 to 10min.
I also take verap, lithium, ibuprophen for preventive and have imitrex injections and zomig for backup.
I have been chronic for 7yrs straight and so far the best results i have gotten are the imitrex and now the O2 so far.
not sure if i did the inderal before but it sounds familiar.

I tried inderal and it lowered my blood pressure and made my hands freezing cold. It did nothing for my cluster headaches. Don't let drs push you around. Good luck.

I'm not sure if I should post again on this subject but as an additional thought from reading the reply's I think I'll just take the chance. I have had one of the best Neurologist (in the state of Florida) as my primary doctor up till I moved to PA, we tried every drug for prevention and maintenance I think known to mankind, however most only worked for a few doses ( yes we tried uping the dosage ) or didn't work at all with me. Now don't get me wrong but my neuro said most of the meds or scripts given to CH patients where not developed for our problem and that in his option most of the drugs had side effects that outweighted the benefits of using these drugs, this is one of the main reasons I posted my message about my usage and happiness of using O2 instead of the drugs.

I'm going to go againt the basic grain here. Inderal LA 160 mg has helped me. Better the calcium channel blockers. All the CCB's doses didn't help me as they do the others here.
The stardard Inderal had some nasty side affects which I found didn't do a thing for me either. I take one 160 mg a day and when the CH's are real bad one every 12 hours. It took awhile (a few weeks the best I can recall) to show me anything yet with the Inderal I can take pain meds and chill a kip 9 - 10 down to a five/four or so. This is as long as I get to the pain meds fast otherwise it's to bad and I'm a hurtin'.
I did o2 and had no luck with it at all.
I believe what you'll find here is that those of us who are lucky, and do have something that helps, all vary. What works for one will not work for the other. I wouldn't knock someone if they told me eating twice baked mud patties worked for them! Whatever works for you is GREAT!
I would ask about the long acting. I've had my CH's for 32 years now and since I've been doing these I have been able to do away with a load of other meds that didn't do squat.
MAYBE this could be your answere, maybe not. I wouldn't knock it until I tried it.

I know treatments vary, etc. etc. I still have alot left to try if this doesn't pan out. However, I'm willing to give it a couple of weeks as long as I can keep the pain down to a somewhat manageable level. The 10's the were killing me. So far, I haven't gotten past a 7-8 yet andI've only been on the meds since Tuesday. Luck? probably.
