Kayleigh, I'm sure you'll be getting plenty of useful advice from your fellow clusterheads on this board, especially regarding the use of psilocybin (I haven't tried it yet). I just used cold air therapy to finish off the kill of one of my weaker attacks - this was after my time on the oxygen ran out. I've definitely found that breathing very cold air will abort attacks at the beginning of my cycle. Here's a link for the cheap and ingenious "tube in the freezer method" http://www.clusterheadaches.com/wwwboard/messages/4283.html I haven't tried this "redirecting blood" one yet either, but it's free: http://www.clusterheadaches.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?action=search2 Then there's the water X3 treatment that you'll find on of the buttons on the left of this page. Whaddya say clusterheads, let's get together and find this girl some relief! What would be the best links for psilocybin therapy?

Dear Kayleigh, there are those who would disagree, however, it worked for me lots of times. The instant you feel the headache coming on, drink hot strong coffee (the caffeine helps constrict those fat boy blood vessels). during a really bad attack, the success rate diminishes significantly, but for the lower kips it can really help you out. Also, hot, hot, shower or bath (for about 10 min, if you can) and then ice paks to areas of pain. Keep crused ice or bag peas in freezer. the hot bath alleviates stress while the cold paks aid in constricting the blood vessels. CH comes on fast, so be prepared to MOVE IT! I wish you luck, let us know how you are doing. Smiles, kim

HI Kayleigh-- as indicated above, shrooms, i.e.magic mushrooms, psilocybin, etc. has had good results. This is where you should start: http://www.headachesupportgroups.com/shrooms/2000.htm Read this stuff and you will at least know more than you do now. Sorry you're here and I hope you can find some relief. These folks are a bit twisted but there's all kinds and I think they're all OK--well, some are marginal, I guess. Best of luck...Steve

For me when I had no meds I use ice, I have been know to dive into my pool the cold water aborted it in seconds. I use a cold shower heat makes it worst on me so hot showers are out. I also at night before I go to bed I use a nose strip on my nose its called Breath right (you know like the foot ball players wear on their nose)! Hot pepper under your tongue helps also. Driamine has helped to taken before bed. Thats a pill for motion sickness. Take a baggie and put half water and I think a third of alcohol in it. Close the bag then double bag it put in the freezer, then when you have a attack you have a soft slushy type ice pack. instead of that hard ice. I wish I could think of all the things I use to do. I wish you luck. I wish I could help you with the insurance problem.

If you do find yourself going in to see a dr. they can give you free samples if you explain your situation to them. Also Galaxo SmithKline may have a program. You may want to contact them directly and explain your situation. Maybe you can get meds at a reduced rate or something. They will usually work with you.

I was in the same boat you are in and was spending about $700 per month on meds. It really hurt us financially and after about 6 months I realized that I was eligible for assistance thru the VA Hospital. If you have served in the Armed Forces at any time for any length of time you are eligible for assistance thru the VA Hospitals. Many people who are my age (32) don't realize that we can get the help just like someone who served in WWII or Vietnam. Based on my income I get to see a Family Dr. and a Neurologist and get my meds at no cost. It is such a relief to be able to get help and not worry about bankrupting the family. This may not apply to you, but maybe someone else can benefit from the information. Best of luck to you!

i hang my head over the tub and let cold water run on the side that hurts..... once it starts to subside i keep a cold wash cloth over the eye socket....and sleep with it (if you rember, put a towel under the wet wash cloth so your pillows dodn't end up smelling like wet dog...which can be a trigger itself.....) I also keep a fan running for white noise to block out other sounds......

yes indeed, i've had many a soggy stinky pilly. cold rag or towel - keep dunking it in tub full of COLD water and pressing to areas of pain. With the towel, you can wring it out and use it on the bulging neck/shoulder muscle and the face at the same time, just wrap it around and press with your head to hold the towel tight to the shoulder. Looks kind of like eigor, but can help... the other end can use on eye, face area. Just need a good size towel...

Hi, I am in the same boat right now with my medicine to control nerve pain. I've been told it can cost upwards of $1000 a month or more! My sister works for a doctor and she says you can request your doctor to write to the drug company and explain your situation. Often times the company will provide the drugs for free for "compassionate" reasons. It's worth a try. Good luck.

Hey Keyleigh, Same situation here too, and I found a solution: clinical trials! I just started on a cluster headache clinical trial at the Houston Headache Clinc (National study though). They've got me taking Civamide (Zucapsaicin) Nasal spray. It's like spraying pepper spray in your nose. The clinic is also giving me free Imitrex samples to take when I get a bad one. Hell, they're even paying ME :) only $125 but thats still pretty damn funny. the study is sponsored by Winston Laboratories. Maybe you can contact them... I can email you a phone number if you want. later, Randy.

Hiya My husband is a sufferer, who just last night tried something I had seen on this site (thanks whoever it was that had posted it!!!!!!) You CH starts, get in the bathroom, run a few inches of cold water in the bottom of the bath, stick your feet in. Then run a freezing cold shower over your feet, intermittently is ok. He found after approx 5 minutes his CH aborted. This is like a miracle cure for him, I hope it helps you.

I find that Tiger Balm massaged into the area of pain helps for the lighter attacks. I also use it for normal non-CH headaches and it usually works better than aspirin . It sort of anaesthatises the skin and just below the surface. Feels hot at first and the smell is strong and nice and also helps clear the head/sinus. Does not work for the big ones though. love J
