J Headache Pain. 2007 Sep;8(4):236-241. Epub 2007 Sep 24. Botulinum toxin type-A therapy in cluster headache: an open study. Sostak P, Krause P, Förderreuther S, Reinisch V, Straube A. Department of Neurology, Klinikum Großhadern, Ludwig-Maximilians University, Marchioninistr. 15, 81377, Munich, Germany, Petra.Sostak@med.uni-muenchen.de. The objective of this open single-centre study was to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of botulinum toxin type-A (BTX-A) as add-on in the prophylactic treatment of cluster headache (CH). Twelve male patients with episodic (n=3) or chronic (n=9) CH, unresponsive to common prophylactic medications, were treated with a cumulative dose of 50 International Units (IU) BTX-A according to a standardised injection scheme into the ipsilateral pericranial muscles. One patient with chronic CH experienced a total cessation of attacks and in 2 patients attack intensity and frequency improved. In another patient with chronic CH typical attacks were not influenced, but an ipsilateral continuous occipital headache significantly improved. Patients with episodic CH did not benefit from BTX-A treatment. Tolerability was excellent. THESE FINDINGS PROVIDE EVIDENCE THAT BTX-A MAY BE BENEFICIAL AS AN ADD-ON PROPHYLACTIC THERAPY FOR A LIMITED NUMBER OF PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC CH. PMID: 17901920 [PubMed}

I tried it 3 times with just a little difference (not worth the cost if not covered by ins), it did make it a lot easier to keep my eye glasses resting on my forehead.

I have had 4 treatments and now I can honestly say, (FOR ME) it does not work! At first I thought it did, now I know it was other meds I was taking at the time! Back to the drawing boards. Ed

My numbers are probably wrong, but the reults show that............... 8% PF 16% better than before 75% nothing changed I thought that was very cool Be nice if 8% of the chronics here became pf for even a little while. Thanks Bob, Sean.................................

So true - for the 8% that it really does work for it will seem like an absolute God-send. The timing for this conversation is quite interesting - a friend mentioned botox to me the other day and I thought they were nuts. I had heard of it being used for other conditions but not for CH. Then I started to do some digging and sure enough it has worked for a few lucky folks out there, so it's at least worth a look if nothing else is working. Cheers -

Alrighty, having attained the status of being "in my 50's", I'm noticing more "expression lines". Is this the same botox treatment that one would use to address the issue of "expression lines"? Or must one just ingest the poison to affect the chronic clusters, which I join the 8% in having. Kathy (hoping that I could possibly kill two birds with one stone)

I'd sign up to try it out if they'd take care of the 11's between my eyebrows...
