02 invention

Hi guys,
I've been having difficulty finding a bubbler for my 02 and really want to try out the effects of freezing cold 02.  my partner being the tinkerer (is that even a word?) he is, has come up with an idea.  He has gotten some of the tubing and coiled it and tied it together with a little tie thing, not tight enough to create a seal inside the tube but tight enough to keep it together.  he then submerged it into a tupperware box full of water.  The ends of the tube both poking out.  He put the box in the freezer and it is currently starting to freeze.  Now the idea is, that because the tubing has no water in it the inside cannot freeze, but if I were to attach the piping to my 02 the tubing is inside the ice and the 02 can flow freely through the tube, through solid ice.  Thus creating freezing cold 02.  This sounds like it could work but before i tried it out I thought I'd run it by you guys incase there's anything that could arise from this that i can't see.
What do ya think?

Sounds lik a great idea to me! The only problem I see, is the fact water expands when it freezes, and could, in theory, crush the tubing as it freezes around it, but since it'll be freezing at basically the same rate, it shouldn't crush it. It'll be getting equal pressure added to it. I might even consider adding a good amount of salt to the mix. Salt lowers the temp at which water freezes, thus making it even colder.
Let us know if it works! I'd like to try it too, as I don't have a bubbler either.

Good luck!

First of all, I'm not sure why you had "difficulty finding a bubbler," but if you will        look here:
http://imed.com/shop/detail.cfm/sku/K5133
They have humidifier/bubblers for sale for $3.19 plus about $6.00 shipping (the K5133 is their stock number.)

Secondly, I'm wondering about your desire for "freezing cold O2."  The first thing that comes to my mind is BRAIN FREEZE!   I'm not sure I'd want one at the same  time as I'm having a cluster headache (regardless of the KIP)  But different strokes for different floks as they say.

I'll be interested in what effect, if any, it has on your pain.

I use Liquid Oxygen for my CH which is by nature much colder than the normal stuff and it makes it even better. I love it, wouldn't change back to the ordinary O2 ever through choice.

Try making the O2 colder - you'll like it I'll bet  Smiley

Squanto, i'm in the uk and it hasn't been easy to find one over here.  The concept of getting the 02 cold is written about in alot of the reports I've gotten from links on here. It's called 02 on the rocks. Plus it's widely recommended that you place ice on the back of your neck, temples etc whilst taking 02.  many people have said that walks in the cold and sucking ice cubes help whilst in the grips.  i'm pretty sure if you're in kip 6 or above you wouldn't really feel brain freeze, but even if you did, it's a small price to pay for relief. Don't knock it til you tried it I say.

Adam, we just checked on it, and it's fully frozen and not crushed or broken at all.  We blew through it and air is getting through ok.  i'll be trying it next hit and will let you know how it goes.

There is nothing better than a creative clusterhead and their supporter working together.  I love it.  If you have trouble re-freezing your rig, you might try rubbing alchol in the water.  That will keep it slushy.  Keep up the good work Sunshine!  Tell your partner I said "ata boy"! Cool

Hi Sunshine,
I’m sorry to hear that you might not be getting full benefit from your O2. I hope this helps –

Your Oxygen supplier is charged with providing to you the O2 equipment that is required for you to achieve satisfaction.
However, they cannot provide it if you have not been prescribed it.
Simply ask your GP to add a “humidifier” onto your HOOF (home oxygen order form)

It’s likely that you will receive one of these -
Intersurgical -
AquaFlow Homecare Bubble Humidifier with bottle, Code # 1521
AquaFlow Homecare Bubble Humidifier with bottle plus M12 Adaptor, Code 1520

SP sevices
Disposable Oxygen Bubble Humidifier with Bottle, Part # OT/051
Manufacturers Part Number: 1507 / 032-10-090

Also, Tell your O2 delivery man about your difficulties (they usually have a few “extra” onboard)

Re “O2 on the rocks”
The most important factor when combating CH with O2 therapy is speed.
The faster that you get onto your O2 – the better it will work.
At the first sign of symptoms get on it.
Don’t wait
Don’t wait to see if its going to a “bad one”
Don’t just finish your cup of tea or smoke – stop what ever it is you are doing immediately and get onto your O2
In fact I would go as far as saying – even if you “think” that you “might” be going into one – get on it.
Even at the expense of “false alarms” you will “overall” use less O2 and likely be much more satisfied by the outcomes.
So – if you are “faffing” around getting blocks of ice with tubes in it from your freezer and then connecting up, or crushing ice – you are wasting precious time.

Also, also –
I’ve PM’ed my telephone number to you, should you require more personalized info and please can I suggest that you are lucky to be living (south Wales) close to one of the most experienced O2/CH users – Val (known here as Dragonlady). I’m sure that your neighbor Val would be only too happy to assist.

Hope this helps
Yours Ben at clustermasx

It will work.  There are research articles re cold O2 being more effective than warm O2.  Cold O2 the molecules are closer together so you get more with each breath.

This frozen O2 rig was first used byt Bob Kip, creator of the Kip Scale.  He liked it.  He first used a picnic cooler filled with ice & water where he coiled the tubing.  Later he tried the tubing frozen in the ice like you describe.

Wow Bob i didn't realise it had been used before now.  A picnic box would def be better as you can get more coils in it, and as the 02 would heve further to travel it will be really cold.

Just to let you all know, it did work.  It was def colder but I'm not sure as yet if it aborted quicker.  we're going to compose a few experiments over the next few hits and run an experiment to see just how much colder it gets in the ice.  I'll keep you all posted.

Let me just add that although faffing around with getting the iced tubes means a delay on getting the 02 down me, it doesn't take long to go get.  it's set up ready and in easy reach when i go in the freezer and easy to rig up.

Ben uk, I was led to believe that I had to buy a humidifier myself by my practice manager, however after your advice I will be going to get some answers tomorrow, thank you.
Linda, I have PM'd you my address.  That's so great of you to offerto send us each one.  it means alot, thank you x

Hi Sunshine,
Because of the new system most PCT’s are not yet up to speed. Call your oxygen provider for advice, they know much more.

This is the advice for patients from Allied Respiratory (serving my area)
 http://www.alliedrespiratory.com

Patient advice -
 http://www.alliedrespiratory.com/PDF/A53575-GH%20PATIENT%20PA205857.pdf

Please notice –

Humidifiers
• If you’ve been prescribed more than 4 liters per minute you may be provided with a humidifier
Also -
Care of oxygen tubing
Minimal care is required of your oxygen tubing and oxygen mask. We recommend you –
• Wipe clean your oxygen mask once or twice a day
• Discard and replace your oxygen mask every two weeks
• Discard and replace your tubing every 90 days

With the above in mind, ensure that you establish regular replacements
