Hot Bath During Episode

Hello all, I dont know if this will help anyone, but it is mentally therapeutic for me during an episode. During an episode, I will draw a HOT bath and submerge myself in it, sometimes my head too, depending on the particular mood im in. While doing this I press a finger to alternating portions of my affected area (left temple, bone directly above my left eye, and sometimes left side of my forhead). This doesnt stop an attack but it makes it a litte easier to cope with. Maybe its my happy place, I'm not really sure, but it beats banging my head against a wall, and it does allow me to be somewhat calm. I have done this so many times in a single night that there is no hot water left for the morning shower, but my wife is really understanding Wishing everyone PF days! - Dave

This would be the absolute kiss of death for me. I had to stop using hot tubs and saunas because the heat triggers me.

My hubby kevin takes a hot shower, and then tries to be in front of the fan, he says the "drying" of his hair calms him, go figure. If that doesn't work, then he gets the ice-pack and 02 if that doesn't help. I think the bath is calming, esp. when you cool down afterwards. I hope your pain subsides, Leah.

Come to think of it, there is the added sensation of cooling when I get out of the tub. I've never really noticed it before, but I'll chalk it up to another sensation to look forward to that signals the downslope. Thanks

You can remain still in a tub of water during an attack?

Know exactly where you're coming from with this - used to be the hotter the better. Still an option - but O2 has been really good as an abortive in recent cycles and along with alternatives means I haven't had a bath in ages! But had a long, hot sauna when pain free towards the end of an episode and got hit like nobody's business as soon as I came out. As with everything it's just a case of timing I guess.

That's funny, your way of coping is alot like mine. I dig a whole into my temple when I get them and take extremely hot showers. Couldn't be still in a bath. Small World this clusterville ... Your one of the few i've read that uses hot water as a way to cope. Thought maybe I was just crazier than I assumed I was. Added thought, when i'm finally done with an attack my body gets really cold and I get shivers. That's my cooling down period!

I dont know what it is about the hot water, but the hotter the better is exactly it. Laying still in the water works for me for some reason, I have read about the inability to remain still, but I find this works for me all the way through a 10. I seem to be a lucky one though that responds relatively well to meds... at least the ones I have tried. My Dr. prescribed me some new stuff yesterday that didnt work as well as my midrin (still getting shadows with it and a coulple 6 - 7 last night and this morning, but I finally got a few good hours of sleep last night). Again ended up in the tub on both of those. Interesting thing though. My cycle has changed a bit, this is the first cycle that I get hit during the day time, but it also has ramped up. Previous cycles have hit 10's right out of the gate, this time my cycle started off as 1-3 and has progressively gotten worse over the last week. My new meds are Verapimil (Worked before so Im back on it) and Fiorinal (never used but seems to be keeping the beast at bay, and still allowing me to sleep. The Midrin side effects changed this time too. This time the Midrin tends to keep me awake at night, so Ive stopped using it for the time being and will use in dire emergency only.

I too use the shower to keep the beast at bay...only if the o2 is not working...and then it goes o2,shower,rock pace and roll I think the hot water is more of a distraction than anything Just my observation.....PFDAN Take care....Chris

A very hot shower may ease a lesser attack for me, as for being still, no way.....and I too have emptied many a water heater in my day......the cooling effect of the after-shower is comforting at times too. Most like cold only though..... PFDAN's Mark

Total opposite for me! Before I was correctly diagnosed, the drs told me to take hot steamy showers to open up my sinuses (years of sinus infection diagnosis!). I'd get in that hot shower at a k5+ and get my ass kicked right up to a k10 and be rolling on the shower floor sobbing in agony. I've since learned to grab the ice pack as early as possible. Cant imagine it being possible to lay still in a hot bath at a k10!

I don't think I could handle a hot bath, however I still will make a "steambath" placing a towel over my head to trap the steam from a scaulding faucet. An old trick that I still find helpful sometimes

I recall the days when, after exausting my trex for the day, and I was at the mercy of time and the tips we all learn, when, being an ice addict for these fuckers..and it not helping a single ioda, I'd stand under a shower of scalding water. Yes it hurt like a MF'er but I had myself in the frame of mind that that if I upped the pain threshold, it wouldn't last as long. Amazing the shit we convince ourselves of just to cope. We can be our own biggest hurdles if we get too intreanched in our own coping mechanisims. We can convince ourselves that narcodics work, if we fail to understand the nature of the beast. Since I was Dx, and I taked to my Neruro about an escape plan, I never needed it. I carried a letter from her stating that should my treatment plan fail she approved enough meds to knock me from here to oblivian upon failure of all other attemtps. She isn't at my clinic anymore, and I fear starting over. But with www.clusterbusters.com ..I got things covered.

| Damn, Redd...........When I got back into metal work I was brazing bronze grates into steel frames. after doing this on a metal table for about 20 mins someone called out to me and I rested my hand on the table!!!!! Needless to say that my palm blistered up real fast......real fast!......the pain was unreal (like a CH) I got home in so much pain that I thought that if I made it worse it would help.......I held my hand under scolding water as long as I could.......as soon as I pulled my hand away it was like a CH draining out of my head!.....I will never forget it! Thats fucked (messed) up!

It's not a case of lying in a hot bath - I needed the bath so hot it would be difficult to lie in it. Used to assume the position on all fours take a deep breath and immerse the head. Oh happy memories.

Hey ppl! My very first post, check me out lol Just wanted to say that hot water is deffinately a no no with me. Cold water all the way. This is my routine... wake up with headache.... grab glass, grab facecloth.... soak cloth with cold water... drink 2 pints cold water.... push cloth on head. Thats it. been suffering for 7 years now, since the age of 15. I have no pain killers, have tried 'Zomig' but did not help at all. Was also prescribed oxygen... but had no affect. Although it did not have a non-rebreather mask and regulated up to 12lpm. wether or not this would make a big difference i'm not sure. Would like to find out more about pain relief though lol. Over the counter drugs don't do a admn thing so what i have is a facecloth and a glass of water..... fantastic huh? Sorry if im dragging on... just venting and getting my first post out the way lol (losing my message board virginity) Anybody else find that hot water makes the headache 10 times worse? Take care everyone! =D Brett

Hot showers definitely help me, can't lie still in a bath, i do believe that a big part of it is simply keeping busy, the time passes quicker.
