Midrin Discontinued???

Hi All,

I am new to this website, but thanks so much for putting this together.  I have used midrin since I was diagnosed in 2001.  I suffer from episodic CH and it varies as to when the episodes will hit.  I'm starting an episode after 3 years of living PF and am running out of midrin.  When I went to have my prescription filled, the RX told me that he can no longer order Midrin or generic versions.  Midrin, thus far, is the only thing that works for me.

Any idea what happened?

Thanks,

Dave Chandler

Don't know but would guess: Since this is an old migraine drug, it has lost so much market share to the newer meds (triptans, etc.) that the mfg. is dropping it.

Sometimes a smaller company will buy the rights and start marketing it again, so touch base with your pharmacist in a few months.

I'm surprised that this is the only thing that has helped you considering it is essentially tylenol with additional ingrediants....
I imagine that the Isometheptene Mucate helps you since it does work as a vasoconstrictor yet there are TONS of better meds for CHers.

What else have you tried?
MEds? preventatives, abortives?
Oxygen?

I am really surprised that they are not going to make this drug any longer.  It is the only drug that neuros around here will perscribe for minors with ch or migraines.  I wonder what they will replace it with?

Thanks for the info.  Ive tried the following:

Maxalt: Didnt work
Imitrex Injections: Masked the pain a little but added a really funky side effect (felt like my body was burning from the inside out)
Midrin: Works every time
Verapamil: worked 50/50
Self mediacated with Percocette: Didnt work

Good article covering the best thinking  on therapies:

http://www.plainboard.com/ch/chtherapy.pdf

Here is a link to read and print and take to your doctor.  It describes preventive, transitional, abortive and surgical treatments for CH. Written by one of the better headache docs in the U.S.  (2002)
