Topamax - questions and suggestions

Ok, So I am on this Topamax stuff now. I think it is helping (can you ever be totally sure), but one thing is for sure, the stuff ain't kind on the mind. I am currently at 25 mg at night and 25 in the morning. I believe the plan in to get to 175mg total in a day. I am not sure I am going to be able to do that. My questions for those that use this. One, does this dizziness/grog/anxiety get worse or better? What about the stomach issues? Do you get used to this etc? Are my side effects abnormal? On the good side my 2 a dayers are diminishing .... but I think my mind is too. Sure could use a drink. Of course that is out of the question for a ?? while??

Many here call it "Dopeymax" for a reason. It will hamper your ability to think / concentrate and will probably worsen as the dose is increased. Also, for me, kidney stones were a major problem. Topomax caused them twice for me. (OUCH) Better drink plenty of water with this drug and be careful driving (or thinking). Goodluck UNsolved

I didn't like the feeling at 75mg, but could handle 50mg ok. I ended up doing a Verapamil/topmax mix for a while and felt pretty good. Finally, I went to all Verapamil. BTW, since I got on these drugs, I can drink.

Ditto to the above.....i had to get off of it after a week or two,as far as any help with the clusters (none what so-ever)then again that's my exp.with it and i am sure that there are others that have benefited from it.......IMHO they should change the name to "dopomax"........PF to all.........Lenny |

my advice: don't try to drive, someone will switch the pedals on ya. don't try to cook.......stoves stay on all by themselves. don't attempt laundry........ someone will move the buttons around. converse? its better to remain silent and thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt! Sorry hon. I had every adverse reaction one could have asnd the doc took me off it after my trying to communicate ONE sentence. Hopefully it'll work for you, but I went back to vrap. all the best, jen

I was so bad on the stuff that I could not remember how to get to places I've been to several times in the past. I also got very loose liped and said many things I regreted. Did'nt have stomach problems though. It seemed like I got toxic on the stuff after two months or so. I had to go off it all three times I was on it. I also saw little benifit from it, far outweighed by the terrible side efects. I'm sure the teenagers like to feel that way but not me! PFDAN, Roland.

I was on Topo for about a year, started at 100mg and slowly tapered down to 50. I seemed to adjust to the worst side effects but my short term memory was attrocious. Forgot meetings, where I had put the car keys - which sometimes didn't matter because I couldn't remember where I had put the car, etc etc. On the very positive side I was completely PF from about two weeks after starting except for the times where I felt so good that I forgot to take the stuff. I am also on Verap now and the memory is coming back.

Well, I think my Topamax days are over. Had to leave work yesterday since I was too stoned to function. (Doseage was uped yesterday to 75mg) I think I read the same line in a email 14 times before I realized I did that. I also found myself starring off into space for ??? amounts of time. Lost my lunch as well. Back to the doc today for some other junk. (No offense to those that it helps. I just hate taking stuff.) Sadly, I had only minor CHs when I was on it. Of course, I could not think either.

I've just stepped to 50mg of the stuff a couple of days ago,I can't imagine my life at 100mg a day . I went to put my pants on the other day,got one leg on,sat there for who knows how long, and then just took my pants back off,I guess wherever I was going wasn't very important. But like you say Smooth,it seems like it is helping the CH's a bit.

It surely was Dopeymax for me! I went to places and wondered why I'm in there and what I'm supposed to do... You can imagine what it was like to do an essay when you cannot hold a thought... It was horrible. Sanna

If anyone is still searching this and curious about Topamax...I've not had a bad experience after long-term use and gradual dosing up. Started out on 50mg and couldn't remember my own phone number. A year and a half later, I take 300mg and my memory is only somewhat sketchy. Other symptoms are pretty much all gone, too. Feet sometimes feel like they're falling asleep. It didn't take me this entire time for symptoms to go away, either. Just a few months. And Topamax has been the only preventive that has consistently helped me, so it was worth a few months of bad side fx for me, FYI. I still get killer headaches, but overall I don't have any bad side fx. Kate

I got all the typical side effects from Topamax: tingling in hands and feet; soda taste wierd; weight loss; CRS (can't remember shit!) and NO MORE HEADACHES! I tapered upto 100mg/day and now am tapering down. Currently @ 50 mg/day. This is the best I have felt in months. Give and take, baby! Give and take. I'll take the CRS and give up the CH anytime.
