Occipital nerve block

I am sure with all the veterans here that someone has tried this treatment before. I have had eposidic clusters for 31 years and yesterday was the first I have heard of this. The neuro did it for me and I was PF all night - couldn't believe it. It's like someone is playing a joke on me and I am just sitting around waiting for the big one to hit. The neuro said it could last 2 months! Has anyone had any luck with this nerve block before? If so, did it really last for 2 months? Wishing for everyone here to be PF. Alex

Yes, I've had it done many times. I read that if it does work, on average it works for just over 2 weeks. ( Sorry, no link. I think the info came from MHNI ). But it certainly is possible that it could help for longer. My first one worked and lasted 17 days ... all later tries failed. ON blocks have a mixture of drugs in them ... one of those drugs is usually a steroid, which may provide temporary relief alone. If ON blocks are tried several times and are effective, an Occipital nerve stimulator may be beneficial. Goodluck UNsolved

| It's a shot in the back of the head/neck area, in the Occipital nerve region, with a mixture of medications. UNsolved

First time for me it did not work. The second time it possibly worked but I was also on DHE at the time and on a very LONG bad run of out of control hits and had been inpatient for 2weeks so I'm still not sure to this day if it was the block, or what (i doubt it was the DHE cause i was on it for 2weeks at that point already) so it was either the block or the CH just decieded to give me a break. Either way this babble ends with I had a week - week and a half break if I recall correctly. Horsegirl, it's a very simple, painless (in my book anyways) needle in the back of your head that makes your head feel numb on that side. I heard a pop sound when they inserted the needle and felt the numbless crawl my head and then it was over. Sometimes they doe it twice to be sure (atleast that was the case with me) Then it's over and you go home.

That's too bad Vegas. I'm sorry it didn't work. The beast is insidious like that. Almost like it knows you've tried something new, allows you to believe it worked only to crush you the next night. Hang tough. Keep fighting. -Dennis-
