Hi , Im fairly new here. Im not a spammer haha , i was on he old forum about 3 years ago.

Anyways, i usually suffer from cluster headaches around this time of year, EVERY SINGLE DAY around the same time of day. I used to take Verapamil, but i heard about Sinus Buster on the radio and decided to AT LEAST give it a try.

I've had it for 3-4 days now and despite the initial shock from the spray, it seems to be working for me so far!

Has anyone else tired it b4? Did it work for you?

Hello and welcome:

I have not tried this product, but I've heard from others that it was INEFFECTIVE.  I am happy if you find something that helps you without harming you!

Wishing you PF days and nights,

Geek I'll say this once so you know - promoting that stuff here is like a red rag to a bull.

We've had more than enough salespeople trying to tell us they have CH and it works for them and its bollocks frankly.

I'd recommend you take the Oxygen, its far more effective. I swear by it and it will abort a hit in five to seven minutes for me.

What dose of verap were you on? Alot of docs make the mistake of leaving people on too low a dose and then it won't work.

If you want more info on stuff that does work then we will all help you happily but if you want to continue spouting off about sinus buster then prepare to be flamed! It WILL get ugly!

We'd love to help you find some proper treatments - I hope you will let us

A double-blind placebo-controlled trial of intranasal capsaicin for cluster headache.

Clinical Immunology Unit, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston 92114.

It has been suggested that treatment of cluster headache (CH) patients with topical capsaicin may desensitize sensory neurons by depleting the nerve terminals of substance P. We attempted to determine whether capsaicin is effective in aborting CH attacks. Patients in acute cluster were randomized to receive either capsaicin or placebo in the ipsilateral nostril for 7 days. Patients recorded the severity of each headache for 15 days. Headaches on days 8-15 of the study were significantly less severe in the capsaicin group vs the placebo group. There was also a significant decrease in headache severity in the capsaicin group on days 8-15 compared to days 1-7, but not in the placebo group. Episodic CH patients appeared to benefit more than chronic CH patients. These results indicate that intranasal capsaicin may provide a new therapeutic option for the treatment of this disease.

Some medical studies say it helps.

Just what I want to do, shove hot pepper extract up my nose during a cluster attack.  The theory here is if my nose burns so bad, I might not notice my headache, right?  Did you ever get any of that stuff in your eye or mucus membranes?   Shocked

It's kind of funny as a side note......(everyone who knows me knows I don't promote anything!!!)....but you can overcome your physical reactions to pepper spray as it's mostly psychological.

In our specialized units they spray us regularly and make us perform routine tasks, teaching us to fight thru the psychological effects, and accept that it's really just hot pepper on the tongue pain and nothing else.

Bob P. is one of the more thorough researchers on this board and if he says studies show some benefit I put a lot of weight on it. So if it works for you and you've taught yourself to endure the side effects go for it!

That being said, I'm with Lelimey. Get thee some oxygen. Almost 30 years dancing with the beast and still my first line abortive. As little as 5-6 minutes the pain is receding, by the 10 minute mark I'm pain free and exhilirated! Good luck to you!!!!

Close but not quite.  The method of action is:
When we are having a cluster attack the brain releases substance P among other things.  Substance P enhances pain, that is makes it hurt more.  By spraying capsaicin in your schnoz on a regular basis you deplete the store of substance P.  When a cluster attack starts there is little or no P left to make the hurt more hurty.

That's why the research says is makes the attacks less severe instead of less frequent.

Heck, our old buddy Paco used to put tobasco under his tongue.  He even passed out those tiny little bottle of tobasco at the Atlanta OUCH convention.

On the off chance that my sarcasm was missed, I had my tongue firmly in cheek during my previous response.  I did use capsacin cream for a while around my right eye and temple.  During an attack, my eye teared so much, I tended to get it into my eye.  That just made the situation worse.

When arthritis gets bad on my knuckles, I'll be glad to rub it in for the very reason you've stated above, to deplete substance P.

I would much prefer to keep it away from my mucus membranes!  There is NO WAY I would use this method.  This is my own personal opinion, your milage may vary!

I'm very skeptical, but just to play devil's advocate...wasn't there a thread awhile ago about strong ginger being helpful?  Maybe chemicals in strong substances...like ginger and pepper...release some sort of endorphins or something like that and act in a similar way.
But....I wouldn't go trying any sort of alternative kind of treatment until I've exhuasted all the standard type stuff....especially oxygen!!! Why would anyone turn down something so safe and effective and go for something a bit off the wall, not very proven, and that sounds like it would have some unplesant after...uhh...smell? Feeling?  ick.  I'd use all the standard stuff first. thank you very much.

Lisa,

You are SO right, and that's a question for the ages. We've all seen people who have not yet tried the best tools in the toolbox only to spend countless dollars, time and effort, to find and acquire these kinds of treatments. And, then argue about their efficacy versus what the rest of us in cluster-dom put ourselves through.

You're right. If you haven't tried oxygen and you come here asking about inhaling capsaicin - it's kind of like that scene from Animal House when Flounder walks up to table of guys playing poker and asks, "So, are you guys playing cards?" We've been playing red hot poker in the eye around here for a long time - and we're not just sitting around playing cards.    Wink

Hope you're doing well Lisa.

Wow ! I sense alot of anger from you. You came out defensively, stating that you weren't a 'spammer' in the first post. Now you're cursing. Is anger and paranoia a side effect from the 'med' or are you always like this ?

Try the O2. IT works for clusters in most cases.

Hi Geek

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt that you aren't a spammer, or snake oil salesman trying to sell us on using Sinus Buster.  Too many people here have been there, done that, with no positive results.

This is not to say that it won't work for you.

You said that you were offered oxygen but never took it.  Why?  02 has been proven to be the best, least dangerous, no side effects, method of aborting a CH hit.  For me, 02 will abort a hit in about 5 minutes.  I go from pain, to pain free, without burning the crap out of my nose.  Why don't you give it a try this time?  It IS  proven abortive, where Sinus Busters is NOT a proven abortive.

Stick around and read - all the tabs on the left of your screen, and read the posts of actual sufferers of CH, what they have tried, what worked, what failed, and what they have learned.

There's more accumulated knowledge about CH here than anywhere else in the world.  Take advantage of it, of us.  That's why we're here.
