O2 Tips?
« on: Jun 14th, 2007, 5:56pm »

After 15 years of CH, I recceived my first O2 tanks an hour ago. I was told to use 7 LPM.

Anyone have some tips to share? I bought a few rebreather masks, nebulizers, and tubes from Moore Medical.

Tips? Suggestions?

Click on the Oxygen Info link to the left for one.  I would try to use 12-15 liters per minute for 10-15 minutes per attack.  Attempt to use the Oxygen ASAP when you feel that an attack may be coming on.  As in the EPA mileage data, your mileage may vary.

Best of luck to be PF,

The re breather masks are not as effective as the  non re breather mask as the idea is for you to deliver 100% 02 to the lungs. You may have to tape over the holes on the rebreather and modify how you use it so you don't get outside air.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE  No matter what else you do, cut the elastic bands off the masks so if you fall asleep the mask falls away from your face and you don't suffocate!!!!

The flow rate can vary depending on how fast/deep you breathe. You need to breathe pure oxygen into your lungs. If you're a heavy fast breather you may need to crank up the flow rate to keep pace with your breathing. If the flow rate is too low, you start breathing faster then it can deliver, you get outside air and the constricting factor gets compromised.

I'm like Ray, the faster I get it started, the more likely it is to abort. Started at the first "oh sh%$ here it comes" feling, I can abort in 8-10 minutes.  Hoping you experience the same level of success I have!

Thanks guys. I misspoke: I bought non-rebreather masks. I cut off the straps.

You'd think that after being around this site since 98, I would have done this sooner!
Thanks again.

Geeze ... I wonder where wimminz get the idea that menz (ESPECIALLY clusterhead menz) are stubborn?

7 LPM is the very LOWEST rate to get results.  Most do not get quick results until they go to at least 10 LPM .. Myself, I start at 15 LPM, and then drop down, once I start to feel results.  You are VERY lucky if you can get results at that low a flow rate.

Good luck, you stubborn, pigheaded individual O2 newbie!!!    Wink Grin

Clustermasx    You gotta get one...seriously, it helps you preserve O2 and get the best bang for your buck....I just threw away my other mask after getting the Clustermasx.  It helps you breathe more steadily and get plenty of O2....and like everyone else said...keep breathing it on a lower flow rate after th HA is aborted.....O2 and Ambertose and I'm set for the rest of my life on earth.

Definately have to go higher than 7LPM with a non-rebreather mask.
Those masks arent supposed to be used below 8LPM.  Its just not enough air.

Also, rather than lie down, u might wanna try standing (or sitting) up.  It's easier to dance that way   Wink

I can't sit or lie still.  Without O2, I'm pacing the house.  Once I got set up, I found a rocker works well, but sometimes still need to stroll.

I also endorse the clustermasx.  Do your best to relax, adjust the flow simply to the point where there is the right amount filling the bag between breaths.  For me, its around 8-9lpm; anything higher just leaks out.

Let us know how it works out, mule.
