I was just wondering if anyone has givin this a shot yet. It's actually getting pretty big with the teenagers around here because it is sold in variety stores and apparently gives you an intense LCD like experience for a very short period of time. Might just be the ticket for some. Here is a good link. Scroll down a bit and it says it was/is used for headaches.

I recall one sufferer who claimed to have some success with Salvia Divinorum who actually posted here a couple of years ago.  Haven't heard from him since though Undecided

Although the side-effects of SD maybe similar to other entheogens associated with the treatment of CH (which tend to act serotonergically), the true mechanism of action of SD is (likely to be) dissimilar, as it is a highly selective kappa-opioid receptor agonist:

Quote:
Chemistry/Pharmacology:
"Salvinorin A" the active component of S. Divinorum, is most effective when vaporized and inhaled. Chemically, Salvinorin A is a neoclerodane diterpene, a psychotropic terpenoid. The grouping of psychoactive plants containing terpenoid essential oils includes Salvia Divinorum, Wormwood (Absinth), and Cannabis Sativa (tetrahydrocannabinols, THC). Divinorin A was chemically characterized by Valdes et al., in 1984, however Ortega et al., (1982) had previously characterized the same substance and called it Salvinorin A and thus, out of convention, the psychoactive substance should be called Salvinorin A. A dose of 200 to 500 micrograms produces profound hallucinations when smoked. Its’ effects in the open field test in mice and loco motor activity tests in rats are similar to mescaline. Salvinorin A’s action in the brain are not well elucidated. However, recent tissue testing (in vitro assays) have suggested that Salvinorin A may act at the kappa opiate receptor site, but functional assays are lacking to determine the exact mechanism of action of this drug substance.

Although a large number of drugs may be considered psychoactive only a small group are generally identified as hallucinogenic or entheogenic, namely: LSD, LSA, DOM, mescaline DMT, psilocybin, psilocin, and their congeners.  They can all be considered members of the same drug class for two important reasons: firstly they elicit a common set of psychological effects and secondly, these drugs display both tolerance and cross-tolerance.  However, certain molecular differentials do exist: LSD and LSA are classified as ergot derivatives; mescaline and DOM are phenylethylamines; and psilocybin/psilocin and DMT are indoleamines.  The latest research I have found suggests that SD is in a class of its own but probably closer to the phenylethylamines.

A more detailed explanation, together with a user survey, can be found here:  http://www.erowid.org/plants/salvia/salvia_survey1.shtml

And if you get bored, this review covers the current state of research into the psychopharmacology of SD:
http://www.ncl.ac.uk/medplant/about_mprc/My%20Webs/Sage/S.divinorum/psyc hopharmacology.htm

My concern is that, unlike other entheogens, the potential toxicity of SD is largely unknown.

 I definitely agree with Matt!!!

That stuff may be ok if you want to be the next Carlos Castaneda, but it is soooo bizarre I can't imagine it having a beneficial effect on anyone suffering with our kind of pain.

 IMHO.......Tim
