When to Stop Topamax

My four to five week episode turned into a four month episode. After trying many different solutions, many of which had been somewhat effective in the past, I found Topamax to be the most effective. At only 25mg. the headaches seem completely gone, not even a shadow. Even the low dosage makes me somewhat tired and depressed and I'd like to stop taking it now. Smiley Should I taper, and see if they start to return. How do I back off without getting killed again. This was my worst episode ever. Do you think Topomax will work next time? Thanks for your replies.

Hi Bent

That is a question you best ask your doctor, the one who prescribed Topamax for you.  No one here knows you well enough nor is in a position to give you that sort of answer.

It does happen that once you taper off the meds the beast can return, plus we dont know what other meds or medical conditions you have. Since this was your worst episode ever, your doc may decide that you should stick with the med a bit longer to reduce the chance of it coming back.

Regarding the question whether or not it will work again next time, no one will know. It may or it may not. Its common for one medication to work really well at one time suddenly stops working and vice versa.

Sorry that I couldnt be more specific. I am really glad that you are finally painfree though.

Take care and enjoy the break, may it be a loooooooong one.
