muscle pain & calcium channel blockers

Hi there, I just wanted to post a note here re muscle pain and calcium channel blockers (verapamil). I recently became aware of this via my post polio medical newsletter: "remember that rhabdomyolysis and muscle pain are more likely if you're taking a combination of cholesterol lowering drugs, calcium channel blockers, immune system inhibitors, certain antibiotics or antifungal drugs...." this was of interest to me as I also suffer from a pain condition called fibromyalgia - its been playing up a lot lately - so much so that I've had a hard time sleeping, anyway I started tapering off the verap which I've been on since Jan - figure this cycle's got to be near its end - but boy of friggin boy the shadows are so intense!! Ah what can ya do? Shadows are better than hits yes. Anyways just thought I'd pop it on in case anyone else has noticed an increase in muscle pain whilst taking verapamil. This might be why, of course no pain worse than CH so I guess we just got to do the best we can. Kate

I never noticed any muscle pain from verap. In fact I have been on it steadily for two years, and it is the only drug that I can say seems to have absolutely no side effects (that I can detect) for me. I havent gone above 480 mg though. chrisw

Only have muscle pain (more like an ache) from the verap if I'm overly tired .... Adding: Not sure its the verap or just being overly tired. I do tire more easily on verap.

When my heart allowed me to take it (480Mg/day), I used to get muscle cramps sometimes. And it tended to make me tire easily. But it sure as hell stopped my CH in its tracks, when I could take it.

I've never had my pain increase due to taking verap. Beware the cholesterol lowering drugs, any sudden pain felt while taking them can be harmful. It may not be the verap, although everyone is different.

When I was on heart meds my cardio told me to take 100 mgs of Q 10 a day for the muscle pain. I was on statins and also beta blockers along with a long list of heart meds. This did help. By the way I was told I had angina yet I was able to take Imitrex 100 mgs pills at night. And I also took 3 nasal sprays during the cycle. Didn't have a problem but I have been off all heart meds for over a year. Sami
