Making My Own Portable 02 System The Cheep Way

Hello everyone! This is my first post, man what a relief it is to find this website, finally people who really understand what I'm going through. I've suffered from cluster headaches for almost 6 years now. The headaches this cluster period are the worst ones ever, years prior my headaches were much less frequent, but this year they have really kicked into high gear. I've had a CH every day but 4 for the last month, sometimes more than one a day.
Currently I take 100mg Imitrex tablets and Neproxin Sodium as an anti-inflamitory, the neproxin doesn't seem to help at all.
I've been doing alot of reading on this website and others about using oxygen for relief from CH. I'm strongly considering going the welders oxygen route and had a few questions for anyone that could help.
I found a small portable oxygen tank with regulator intended to bait fish their is 4 models to choose from. The smallest one being 3 lbs., 15.5" X 3"
The biggest one being 9 lbs., 29.3" X 4.5"
it also says Tank Time at 2200 PSI - 47 hours
The reason I'm drawn towards this is this excerpt from the website

The picture is extremely high resolution but very small if you magnify the picture you can see clearly that the regulator looks very similar to a medical one, as does the fitting for the oxygen hose
What do you think? Will this tank have the 6+lpm output I need? If not could I put another regulator on it?

Not at 12-15 lpm. If you turned that regulator up to the 12-15 lpm range (assuming it went up that far), that tank would last you about 5 minutes. Just enough time to make you wish you had 3 more of 'em.
Yes, it looks like a medical regulator, and who knows - maybe it functions like one as well. I'll stick with one I know is going to give me what I need.

I don't know if it will work or not, BUT, you asked if it would produce 6+ lpm ... You need MUCH higher flow rate than 6 LPM .. SOME can get results as low as 8 LPM, but most of us use it at 15 LPM ... yes FIFTEEN LPM ...
Regulators can be gotten very reasonably priced on eBay.
For the best mask, go to www.clustermasx.com ... it is the best mask you can get!
Also, you said that you are taking imitrex tablets .. Do they do anything for you??? Imitrex is an abortive, not a preventative. And as an abortive, a pill is too slow to be effective. Most use the injections, that can stop a hit, sometimes as quick as 3 or 4 minutes, but usually within 10 minutes. No way a pill can work that fast.

From what I understand, that process is extremely dangerous and also illegal without a license. That said, it doesn't mean it's not done. Perhaps someone else with experience in that arena will chime in. I get my O2 from a medical supply house, and I always make sure I have a good supply of smaller, portable tanks on hand.

Hi and welcome. Does your insurance cover medical O2? Then you can have a large tank at home and travel tanks as well. I suspect you could buy different size welders tanks, too. Let the pros fill them.
Also...pills are too slow.

As far as the Imitrex goes I take the pills because they are the cheepest, I have NO insurance..... but they do start to work after about 20 minutes
How expensive is medical 02?

If you are uninsured... read up on Red Bull, and kudzu. They can work as well as meds. Red Bull as an abortive and kudzu as a preventative. You'll find lots of threads on them here on the meds board.
I use welders O2. A 3 1/2 foot tank cost me $135. new and $25, to fill. The Airgas place had smaller tanks also. I paid about $25 for a 540 regulator (they can be found on Ebay) and $25 for a clustermasx.

Agreed with Brew. I have always thought much the same thing.
At my local welding supply place I see them place the tanks into heavy steel tubes when filling, to contain any possible tank explosion.
That said, many average Joes who play paintball fill their own mini CO2 tanks, and they are not dying all that often.
I still would not have the balls to do it myself.

I have an 80 gallon "E" tank and it only costs $20 to refill. I've been getting hit 10 or more times per day lately and 2 tanks will usually last a week through heavy use.
The equivelant of medical O2 would be hundreds of $$$.
There are fittings available to match a medical regualtor to a welding tank. Jonny knows alot about that...
But I have had great success using the clustermasx with a welding regulator. Liters per minute is not an issue with a welding reg.
If you put one of the larger bags on the clustermasx and just find a good way to attach the masx hose to the regualtor, fill the bag and then reduce airflow to a low rate, it works very well. The larger bag makies it so you never runn out as long as you have sufficient O2 flowing to refill at a slow rate.
Also, I find that O2 works much better for me when I take deep hits and hold my breath. It save O2 and it's not nearly as painful. Continuous breathing (for me) makes the headache intensify 10X worse. It might make it end a little quicker, but the pain intensification isn't worth it.

Also, welding shops or industrial gas supply place usually carry a variety of tank sizes. There's a tank, a 20 gal I think, that is plenty small enough to be portable and holds enough O2 to kill at least 2 or more headaches.

I would try to get a scrip for o2 from your Dr....The first time I aborted a ch with o2 I wanted to run out into the street and tell the world I just killed the devil after yrs of ch I had never had aborted one in 6-7min it was....amazing  good luck

Also If you were going to fill your own bottles you would need a gas manifold system we use one at work to fill our own bottles I'm an EMT so we use 3 "k" bottles pigtailed together to fill our portable "d" bottles but also the system is asme inspected and to tell you the truth its kinda freaky filling the bottles 2200psi a lot of pressure and the manifold makes all this noise.....like somethings going to let loose....

Sure, you can get the adapters and manifolds to do it, but there are several issues that come up with doing it without the proper equipment. First of all you'll need more than one large cylinder in order to fill a smaller one to full capacity/pressure. Second of all if you're doing it without a proper scatter guard you are asking for a HUGE bang with flying shrapnel. Trust me on this, I was at the NYS fire academy when an SCBA cylider let go, and even though contained in the fill station, it still scared the living bejesus out of me. We have a huge armored cabinet/scatterguard on our compressor in the station, and I'm still a little leary being around it.......

Thank all of you for your input! and talking me out of ordering that transfill valve and killing myself! I went and bought a Q size tank (holds 80 cubic feet) ordered my Clustermasx last night, I just need a regulator and a smaller portable tank.

Just a comment on Superpains post. I use a demand regualtor, similar to a scuba but it's actually on old push button positive pressure para medic rig. Like superpain, I like taking the really deep breath and holding it. The nice thng about a demand regulator is it only runs while you inhale then it stops. I use e-tanks and I can abort an attack in about 200-300 pounds.
