Weening off of the Inderal

I've been on Inderal for what seems to be forever.  I'm 25 and I've been on it basically since I was 7.  I take 120 mg daily.  However, I've done the every other day thing for a few weeks and now I'm doing the every other 2 day thing now.  My heart feels like it's going to beat out of my chest, but I know that I need to do this.  Only 12 more hours to go until I take another one.  I took one Sunday and I have to take one tonight.  I hope I'm doing the right thing and that my headaches don't start back up.  But I'm still on Verap, so I should be ok.  Thanks for reading.

You've been on both of these for ages!!!
Please do it slowly and do it with your doctors guidance.
If your heart is starting to beat really fast PLEASE talk to your doctor!!!
Careful my dear!!!

luv ya

I agree with Eric.  If you haven't done so, you should talk with your doc before making medication changes and follow his/her advice.

I wish you the best of luck.

Kim, I not only agree with Eric and Mike about seeing a doc, I think you should see a new neuro if your doc has you on both inderal and verap.

Inderal (propranolol) is a beta blocker. Beta blockers, including propranolol, have an additive effect with other drugs which decrease blood pressure, or which decrease cardiac contractility or conductivity. Clinically-significant interactions particularly occur with verapamil, epinephrine, 2-adrenergic receptor agonists, clonidine, ergot alkaloids, isoprenaline, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, quinidine, cimetidine, lidocaine, phenobarbital and rifampicin. (Rossi, 2006)

I remember using inderal about 20 years ago as a CH preventive, it didn't work.

Your "heart feels like it's going to beat out of my chest" you are experiencing is probably caused by hypertension. I would ask a new doc about transitioning from inderal to a combination of an ACE inhibitor and a diuretic.

My doctor is aware of what is going on.  I'm not doing this without them knowing.  The Inderal/Verap combination is why I'm slowing weening off of the Inderal.  It doesn't help anyway, but I've continued to take it because I was scared of the side effects of weening off, such as my heart beating a bit faster, but after a few weeks of taking Inderal every other day, it seems ok, so now I'm tapering down to every other 2 days.  I am just tired of taking this medicine!

Thank you for all of your concern.  I appreciate it!

Another note about Inderal and other beta blockers...

Beta blockers decrease nocturnal melatonin release, perhaps partly accounting for sleep disturbance (Stoschitzky et al., 1999).

That's bad news for CH.

Were you prescribed Inderal as preventive for cluster headaches ? I have seen it used for migraines but not cluster headaches.

All the best.

It was used for migraines, which I have rarely, not for CH.
