Has anyone heard of this?

I was just told about a new treatment for (dare I mention the “M” word?) migraines. From what I have been told, it has been approved in Russia and in the UK. It is a one time shot that you get (in your butt) and it stops migraines, supposedly, forever. Now, it is true that clusters are NOT migraines, but we all know that some migraine meds work for us, too. Has anyone heard of this new treatment? The drug is called, LARDACGACTYL. I hope that is the right spelling, as I am getting the information third or fourth hand. I cannot get any answers when I check in Google, nor in rxlist.com. Does this ring a bell to any of our “over the waters” family members? I am posting this to both the medical and general boards to get the fullest dispersal. Chuck

| I know of one, but I can't recommend it. The main side effect being a dirt nap. Not that it hasn't crossed my mind a time or two... But...no. Let us know if you find anything out, Chuck. BTW, I referred a couple of ER residents to your video the other night--the more non-CH'rs who see and understand (at least a little) the better. Maybe somewhere down the line it will save some poor SOB a little pain. Hope you don't mind. George

Could it be LARGACTIL ? Which is Chlorpromazine hydrochloride , an antipsychotic drug similar to Zyprexa ( Olanzapine ) which is also used to abort cluster attack. Its also in the same class as Lithium. Maybe a Largactil injection can abort a migraine/cluster attack but I am not so sure about the "forever" bit. Annette

This is a little off-topic, but did anyone else read LARDACGACTYL as "LARDASGACTYL"? Perhaps since Chuck mentioned it was a shot to the butt, I was expecting to see the words "LARD ASS" in there somewhere.

Here is my post from the General Board that unsolved was talking about: Could you be talking about Largactil? If so, I see nothing about it being a one time cure all for migraines. Here is what I did find... http://www.migraines.org/treatment/prothora.htm Quote: Chlorpromazine (aka Thorazine, aka Largactil) is often used to treat the nausea and vomiting and, to some extent, the pain associated with a Migraine attack. It also allows the Migraineur to rest more easily and allows other medications to work better. General information about Chlorpromazine: Phenothiazines (FEE-noe-THYE-a-zeens) are used to treat serious mental and emotional disorders, including schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. Some are used also to control agitation in certain patients, severe nausea and vomiting, severe hiccups, and moderate to severe pain in some hospitalized patients. Chlorpromazine is used also in the treatment of certain types of porphyria, and with other medicines in the treatment of tetanus. Phenothiazines may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor. Phenothiazines may cause unwanted, unattractive, and uncontrolled face or body movements that may not go away when you stop taking the medicine. They may also cause other serious unwanted effects. You and your doctor should talk about the good this medicine will do as well as the risks of using it. Also, your doctor should look for early signs of these effects at regular visits. Your doctor may be able to stop or decrease some unwanted effects, if they do occur, by changing your dose or by making other changes in your treatment. |
| While I ve never tried it, have heard nothing good about Thorazine. And yes, I did expect to see "Lard Ass" in the name of the drug when I first read the post on the General Board. LOL

As far as I can recall, Largactyl is now banned in the UK.

Talked to a friend of mine who told me that his dad was diagnosed with major depression with psychotic episodes, was prescribed Largactil and committed suicide a month later, last year. He said his mental state deteriorated markedly after starting Largactil, but no one knows if its the medication that tipped him over. Annette

Thorazine makes me feel violently ill and just wild feeling in general. I would not recomend it to anyone. It does nothing for migraines or ch. At least that is my experience.
