Wingate Univ. School of Pharmacy

Here is an excellent opportunity to teach (and maybe learn) from pharmacy students! Dear Message Board Members, I am a pharmacist and Assistant Professor at the Wingate University School of Pharmacy in North Carolina. I am in charge of the E-mail Patient Program. Our program connects a doctoral pharmacy student with a real patient. The course is designed to help our students learn about medical illness from patients rather than textbooks. The course begins in January and involves once weekly e-mail conversations on a variety of health care topics. We ask you to answer only those questions you are comfortable with and no identifying information is gathered. Only the instructor (me) and your student will have access to your email address. We have had great success in the past with this program. Our students learn a lot from their patients. As a bonus, our students can provide you with drug information if you wish. Feel free to check out our school's website if you would like to know more. http://pharmacy.wingate.edu/home.asp Sincerely, Christian Dolder, PharmD, BCPS cdolder@wingate.edu

This looks like a program that has the potential for the future Pharmacists to actually learn something about the diseases they are selling medicines for. Thanks DJ.

I participated in this effort last time this message was posted. It was a very good experience as I was paired with a sharp guy who was asking good questions and was, from his follow-up questions, clearly reflecting on what I was sending him. It's a good opportunity to help educate the broader medical community.

I was paired with a great student last time around. She was very bright, asked alot of intelligent questions. She genuinly tried to understand what I go through. A great experience.

I've been working with a pharmacist and 5-6 students that change every month locally at Creighton University. My experience has been that they are the ones to befriend. Once they understand the situation, they can lobby your doctor (usually with great success) to get scripts written beneficially and to get access to new medications. Ironically, one of the students was a graduate from Wingate. This program REALLY is helping. Education can come from many angles, and this is definitely turning out to be a good one. I found it particularly valuable to have an informed pharmacy staff when I was put in the hospital for DHE treatments and the on call neuro ordered a medication that was contraindicated for me. The pharmacy staff picked up on it and went back to the neuro to verify. Since it had potentially fatal effects (it would have affected cardiac issues I had) it's a very good thing to have pharmacy residents and techs highly informed about the nature of cluster headaches and the medications prescribed. Most docs really don't know much about the meds they prescribe, so your pharmacist can become your best friend. I've found this to be especially true with the psilocybin trials. The pharmacists at Creighton have participated in other studies using MDMA, psilocybin, LSD and marijuana and they have a good knowledge base on what drugs to avoid with these substances. The docs may not be willing to listen, and more likely are completely uninformed about potential drug interactions with the psilocybin trials so pharmacy students may be our best defense. Cat
