BLS certification

Hi y'all So for a large part of the day today, I was at training for the Basic Life Saving certification for health care providers. It means I am now certified to do CPR, heimlich, and AED (automated external defibrillator) for infants, children, and adults. AED's aren't used on kids under 8 years old or 55lbs though. I'm really excited that I did something else to prepare for my nursing career!! However, I hope I don't have to ever put those skills to use!! Although, given the nature of the field, I'm sure I'll have to at some point... I now have raw knuckles, raw knees, and a slice on my wrist where my watch cut me from all the crazy practicing we were doing, but it was worth it to have these skills! Just thought I'd share. Lizz

Congrats! I wonder what a defibrillator to the side of the head would do for a ch... I bet it might feel good.

LOL maybe so!! hehe I don't think I'd want to be the one trying it on someone else though!! They'd probably take my certification back!! Did they ever use shock therapy for CH like they did for mental health issues? Shock therapy is insane, IMHO!!! Lizzie

Way to go Lizzie! Up until a few weeks ago, i worked for the Red Cross, and one of the things I did was teaching these classes. I think learning basic lifesaving is something that everyone should do. You never know when you might need it. Also, there are defibrillators available now for children 1-8 years old. They're still being rolled out by the various manufacturers, but they do exist. More power to you! Joe

Joe, That's cool about the Peds AED's!! Maybe by the time I need recertification, they will be more out on the market for use, and I'll get to learn them too!! Sure hope I never have to use it, though!! I feel like whenever I have kids someday, I might be a good mom to have around. At least I hope so!!! Lizzie

Lizzie, I work for an airline and some people treat the flight attendants as simply wenches for their comfort needs and as a high flying bar waitress. But all are trained in the same things. It makes me angry that the responsibility they are trained for and people skills it takes to do the job is never respected. There have been several instances where a plane has had to land at the nearest airport due to a medical emergency on board. This takes time to arrange and implement, of course as quickly as possible. During that time the flight attendent calls ahead to the medical team waiting and does the assessment for the quickest route to diagnosis while traveling companions are panicking. Some people file complaints because of the inconvenience to their lives of arriving late and many calls are logged with angry voices as to the expected arrival by the people waiting to pick passengers up. I work customer service and see these complaints. I respond that the lives of people are never a second thought with us. Of course most do not follow up further when I word a response in my usual thorough perspective. Despite whatever, undaunted, they continue to do the important thing no matter what others think or say. You have learned an essential skill which is much more needed. I still want you to be my doc someday. I made need mouth to mouth cluster treatment, which I now know you are well qualified at. No, it's not a listed treatment but you could help a fellow sufferer. uh...with clusters of course, in the interest of nurse to patient relationship. Kevin M. *edit* Congrats. I tried to be appropriately proud of you. I got 'til the last paragraph and got...well, wandering. I've seen your picture.

Thanks y'all! I didn't realize what a complete workout it was until I woke up this morning barely able to move!! LOL Kevin, my aunt was a flight attendant for 30 some years. For most of that time, she was with TWA until that company disappeared, and then she was picked up by American. She didn't like it though. They treated her like she had no seniority because she was new with THAT company, and overall it was a whole lot different than TWA!! She recently got laid off when American made more cutbacks. It's sad because that is all she has done for so long...she doesn't even have any training in anything else! I do think they deserve more credit than they get!! Lizzie P.S. what pic did you see? the one with randy and becky or the ones that i put in my recital post? just curious!!

Lizzie, The one with Randy (uncovered). The others I saw too but you were too small in the picture to see adequately. Nice smile. Yes, American bought TWA and basically put American employees in place where needed and all TWA personnel lost all seniority. One of the oldest airlines. We hire constantly at our airline and have bought 35 new jets to replace and add to our fleet and have options for another hundred. We have many many openings for airport station personnel. We are the largest privately owned airline in the U. S. Had a recent infusion of lots of cash by a California investment company which also owns a big part of Air Canada. Confidentially, they have said we are the better investment. They will take us public in a couple years after developing more national routes with larger planes and far reaching expansion into the Carribbean. PM me if any interest by anyone you know. The closer up the picture, the better!! I communicate much better with the nurses at the institute I go to for treatment. Seems better people skills. They have done a lot for me when talking with them before and after the doc. Do a good job sweetie, your job is in high demand. Not that I'm demanding, but get a job out THIS WAY!! Kevin M
