Guys am I just not getting it or what?

Take a look at this thread, http://www.clusterheadaches.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=meds;action= display;num=1079727700 Here is my response from the end of the post. Am I just not getting it or is my pain tolerance higher. Or do I just have no fucking clue what a real CH is and all of the times that I am screaming into a pillow of my couch downstairs so I dont wake up my kids a frigging dream? on Mar 24th, 2004, 2:00pm, Tiannia wrote:Freddy I really think that you need to talk to your doc about preventative rather then just trying to abort each and every HA. That would drive a person crazy, but if you can get a preventative that can reduce the intensity and maybe the frequency of the HA then you will not be so trigger happy to shoot Imitrx. I mean really 6 mins is all you are allowing it to work? How long your your HA last if you dont have trex to abort? I am really courious as to what level you are experiencing? You say that 5 mins later if was worse then when you took the NS. As I only get 6 NS a month I wait until I KNOW it is going to be a k8/9+ before I use it, they are gold to me. Anything less and I know that it will end I deal with it and pick myself up afterwards. I know how bad CH'es hurt we all do, but you have to deal with the pain for a little bit to allow the NS to work. Mine have been working much faster since I have started making the NS soak intothe nasel membrain rather then sniffing. This was listed here, that you shoot the ns and do not sniff hard, but just enough to make sure that it does not run right out, then pinch your nose closed to allow for the Imitrex to absorb. This cuts the time for the NS to take effect for me. You really might want to try it. PF Wishes to you, Tia |

Your response sounds very appropriate to me. Thats what I do I give it up to 15 min or so maybe a little longer to work.

I usually wait till kip 7-8 before I abort, unless I have to go to work or something, then commence the dance while I wait for it to work. But I use zomig, not imitrex. And I can say, with great relief, thanks to my latest preventive measures, the number of ch that I have to abort, is much lower than in the past.

ok so its not just me that waits to abort. I would hate to waste NS on a K5. That would just suck cause I know my next one would be a K9 and I'd be kicking myself for not waiting.

Pshhh... Hopefully after my neuro visit next week I'll finally be able to undrstand WTF you guys are even talking about. I've finally had O2 for 5 days and it's the only thing that's ever really helped me. Till then I've suffered purely au natural, and while I can understand, because O2 has already become a crutch for me, it seems some people have become sort of weak because of the very things that help them. I would definitely wait. Hell, I wait to use O2 because I want to conserve it! And it's only $18 per tank. I can't imagine... It would have to be pretty fuckin serious for me to use a $75 shot of trex, or even a spray! Of course maybe that's just cuz if I do get trex, I'll be paying for it myself. I guess it kinda sucks... On one hand these meds are a blessing, but on the other hand it's like they make us spoiled, weak... Almost addicted it seems.

Im pretty thrifty when it comes to my oxygen(and insurance pays my tab). I think deep down inside(after 6 years of mucho pain) I enjoy sticking it out as long as possible, maybe 8 being my threshold. Makes me feel like I conquered something, but if the oxygen fails,Im fucked for about half hour.

| I pay $50 for 6 NS, my insurance does not even cover the injections so I most likey will never use them. With two small kids I dont have the extra money to pay for anything out of pocket more then I already do.

| Same here... I guess somehow I get some sort of sick pride out of being able to live through a good ch. It sucks, but I really don't want to become dependent on an abortive. Now, a PREVENTATIVE might be another story! Tell me how to FOR SURE get rid of these things permanantly, I'd do whatever it takes. But I just don't see that happening...

I will usually wait to see how bad it's going to get before injecting. (that only takes about 5 min. to do) I've saved on trex by doing this, and the lesser attacks I just ride out. I'm not sure how I'm gonna do that next cycle though. I used to get through my lower kip clusters with a cig sucked down real fast at the beginning, none through the peak (can't even have one lit during that time), and one afterwards.

I quit taking prevents years ago. Nothing works for me. CH's come just as often regardless. I always wait as long as I can possibly stand it before injecting Imitrex. I hold the needle close by a pray it'll not go to the next level. Even with a shot, it takes at least 15 minutes to work. Sometimes it doesn't work at all. I find you got to learn when to take it. Not too soon/Not too late. Otherwise it won't work. Yes, I've paid $135.00 for 2 shots many many times. It sucks, but $35.00 for a 1/2 shot if Imitrex is worth it to me to abort a KIP7 & up. It's the only thing that keeps my life normal when in cycle. I agree with Freddy, Imitrex is GOLD.

| I agree that Imitrex is gold, but if he is not willing to give it more then 6 mins to work and he is not willing to try the Imitrex tip to the side, it just seems frigging crazy to me.

The discussion sounds as though you all have a single abortive. I have my vials for the rough ones... figured out the doses that worked, same as all of you. .15ml takes out everything, so I get about 4 doses per vial. For the lesser ones I have been seeking out the cheapest form of relief possible, which right now is looking like my generic Imitrex tabs. 50mg is working great, so I am going with 33mg for the next dose or two. $2.50/dose @ 50mg. $1.66/dose @ 33mg. Riding out any CH just f'in blows... I refuse to do it anymore. Too disruptive to the whole life thingy. Rock

Traditionally, I have waited a long time or not at all for using an abortive for my constant head pain. I just have never liked over-using the abortives, and also many of the ones I have been given in the past have really made me tired after using them. So that was the main reason I waited. For CH, right now the only abortive I have is O2. I don't have to pay for it except maybe a small copay? About $15 I think for 4 tanks. I do tend to wait out the smaller k's because they don't out-rival my normal headache pain, but when they start getting up there, I go for the O2 right away. I figure if I got it, I might as well use it and not be in pain! I don't like the idea of prolonging pain, and the longer I wait to use the O2, the less effective it is for me. So I guess I would probably use O2 around a k6? Don't know...I usually don't put it on a scale...when I can feel it getting real bad, I jump to the O2.

Tiannia You are right. ANY of the nasals will take longer than 5 minutes to work, about 10-12 for me, but frankly occasionally 02 takes that long too. I always hit EVERY attack immediately (I'm a pain coward), but then I know I'm very lucky as I pay less than £7 per prescription, whatever that prescription is for. I'm sure if I were paying, I would be more frugal and hang in there with nothing or use the cheaper Zomig pills more often If someone can't tolerate the pain for very long, and some people can't, or are being hit repeatedly, then preventives have to be the sensible route. | Trying to be politically correct. I cuss all the time but I dont want to offend everyone Rock - I do only have one abortive. My insurance will not fill both the Imitrex tabs and the imitrex NS, even though I have the scripts for both. So I have the choice of getting 6 imitrex tabs 2x a month at $30 a fill or 6 imitrex NS for $50. I dont have O2, and if I can ever get a doc to prescrib it I'm sure I will use that. I just felt like I was crazy that if this HA are so very bad why is he not looking for A- O2 and B- preventative so that each and every HA does not acount for Imitrex. There is no way in hell I would use Imitrex twice for the same HA. It is to valuable for me. -Tia

Tia - Ehh... we are past talking about him. See my 1st post in the same thread you replied to. I see your point exactly on the insurance. That is why I am trying to find the cheap sub-$2 non-insurance abort. Thus the India Trex and my other stupid Trex-stretching ideas. With Wendy on this... head goes ping... a needle or a tablet in seconds. We both have that pain allergy. Rock Lobstah
