Is there some sort of container that already comes sterile? This boiling and glassware is a real pain I phantom. Is there an easy way without risk of contamination?

dont know of any containers already sterile but, You can put a bit of water in them and zap them in the microwave for 1 minute and they are supposed to be sterile. Hope that helps.

I assume your talking about sterile containers for growing mushies? You really do need a pressure cooker to sterilize the jars as they reach only 212 degrees by boiling in water versus 250 degrees @15 pounds of pressure for 45 minutes in a pressure cooker. At 212 degrees, some of the bacteria and molds can still survive. At 250 everything is supposedly dead.

Can you go the other way? At -456 all atomic activity stops. (I think my wife emitts that temperature on a regular basis)

I haven't tried this method, but have worked as a microbiologist, and it seems promising. www.mycomasters.com It involves the use of hydrogen peroxide to sterlize media instead of a steam pressure cooker. Seems to be cheaper than steam as well. The author says he has protocols for sterilizing agar media, grain media, and sawdust. Alot of the information is free on the website, but the author doesn't spell everything out (he's trying to sell books, after all). Worth a look. Sterile = the complete absence of life. Requires 252 degrees F heat (steam under pressure), chemical, or ionizing radiation. Santize = the reduction of microbial life forms to acceptable levels. For pure culture work, sterilization is generally necessary. For cultivation of shiitake and other mushrooms on logs, compost, or woodchips, santization may be adequate, but the risk of failure is higher.
