Let's try this again cause this family is great.

I came on for the first time in response to another sufferer's response and told my story, obviously forgetting how when we are all in bouts we can lose subjectivity.  My heart goes out to all of us with the evil ch.  I like most of you used to get great results with Covera...no more.  Than I got Nortryptlyne(sp?) and got bad mood swings  and fu#$%d up dreams.  It is so hard for the people who care about us to understand the pain we are dealing with.  Tell me if this sounds familiar to anyone out there...
You wake up in the morning and feel a slight pressure in the upper right portion of your nose.  You know it's coming today.  5,7,10 hours go buy...bonus! the evil is skipping me today cause I took my 360 mgs of verapamil, ate melatonin before bed, didn't drink etc... Ol about 8:43  you get a knock on you cerebral door.  Silence...We have between 5 to 12 minutes before the most horrible pain we have ever experienced is here.  You can't sit still.  You can't stop the tears(only out of one eye, how wierd is that)  Sweat pours out from under one arm.  You want to scream and your pulse shoots to heart attack levels.  This is the part that some may find offensive.  For ME the worst part of this is the mental anguish...I actually make my ch s worse by stressing my self out knowing the hell is here.  Sometimes I choose to puff some herb to stay calm and dull my feelings though it doesn't always work.  I have tried valium to no avail.  Imitrex?  The vomiting sucks almost (well no it doesn't, I'm just allergic to drugs like that, Perk, Darv, Vikatin) as much as the bout.  Your loved ones can only watch and try to understand.
Two nights ago I had my friends over for a guys night.  Nothing crazy, just junk food and a few Newcastles.  One Miller Lite and it was all over.  I'm a 260 pound powerlifter and I consider my self to have an extremely high threshold of pain.  I got quiet (I could usually talk the ears off corn!) and my boys asked" you want to go to the hospital?"  No thanks, wouldn't help.  I went up stairs for a half hour until the peak came.  Just so outsiders can see ( these guys are like brothers to me) I came down stairs to let them see what it looks like.  My right eye was "cyborg" red and the tears just streamed down my face, though only on my right side.  An hour later the evil was gone but like anything else the remnants remained for the rest of the night.  The herb wasn't helping this one, it was a 9 or a 10.
I am a professional Realtor in the Baltimore area who has been dealing with this illness for 7 years now.  If ANY OF YOU ever need a smile, or just someone to bitch to e-mail me at asunell@aol.  Or (this is unorthodox) call me on my cell@ 443-286-1322.  I understand...We understand. and when it becomes Coldwell Banker Sunell(my last name) Residential Brokerage I can assure you I will donate millions to finding a cure for our illness.  What ever works/eases the pain. Just hang in there all!!!!  P.S. Has anyone heard/tried mixing a few drops of lidocaine/benzocaine w/ a vick's nasal inhaler?  I read this but haven't tried it.

Dude,

Imitrex isn't a pain killer.  I notice you group it with a bunch of narcotic painkillers which we all know have no place in the treatment of clusters anyway.

Imitrex is a triptan drug working on neurotransmitter reception sites in the brain.

Being a powerlifter, here are a few things that may be of interest to you.

 1. Nitric oxide is a blood vessel dilator which is thought to have a role in triggering cluster headaches. Nitric oxide supplements used by bodybuilders and powerlifters to enhance the "pump" and performance might not be a good idea for someone with cluster headaches.
 2. Vigorous exercise (such as squats or running) will stop a cluster headache in progress for some people, but will also trigger a headache with other people. I wonder if this has something to do with nitric oxide production and cortisol production and other types of things that happen when vigorous exercise is performed. Perhaps with your powerlifting background you can help shed some light on some of the biological things that happen when someone performs vigorous exercise.
 3. Prednisone is a preventative medication for clusterheadaches. It is an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid. Sort of a synthetic form of cortisol (which is sort of why I wonder if cortisol has anything to do with why vigorous exercise can stop a headache for me). Do you try to control your cortisol to prevent the catabolic effects it can have on your muscle mass?

Hi asunell,

I could not determine.  Have you used imitrex?  Imitrex injections will abort my headaches in less than 5 minutes if taken early enough. Talk to your doc next next appointment and see if it is appropriate for you.

Good luck

I use Relpax and Neurontin...I do use narcotic pain killers for the shadows that lurk around and f*** with me all day, narcotics are NOT good for treatment, but can help with the dull aches!  ALTHOUGH too much will send you into a kip 10 with no mercy!  Be careful!

OH and welcome, lots of understanding and compassion here!  sending Okie PFDAN vibes to ya!

Asunell,

Just my opinion. I'd stay away from as much of the Pain Killers as possible. CH's can be aborted with Amerge, Imitrex & O2. Lots of prevents that are NOT Pain Killers.

I took many pain killers for years when I first got CH's. Walked around tired and like a zombie most times. Never again for me.

Hey asunell,
Welcome to the board. Verapamil pulled me out and Imetrex works great for me. Narcs are dangerous as we all know and they don't address clusters. Please be careful with them.
It's good to see someone local here...take it easy,

My doc gave me nortrips for preventive.  You're right man, not effective and sometimes surreal dreams.  Gotta keep moving to find what works.  Thanks for hanging.
