Southerners and SNOW - not CH

I spent over 40 years in snowy New England. I have now been down in balmy Eastern North Carolina for over 7 years. I still cannot get over how they react to a snow storm here! We had a "blizzard" here today. We had almost 2 inches of snow! They went into panic mode! ALL schools were closed, ALL government offices were closed, the colleges closed, most businesses closed, and a few towns over, even WALMART closed! The snow NEVER even started to accumulate on any road! It melted before it could build up! Drivers down here saw the snow heading down and decided to end the suspense, and aimed for, and hit a tree! I cannot believe how bad they handle themselves in the "blizzard"!!! Back in Massachusetts, we didn't even notice that it had snowed unless it is over 6 inches! Here, they freak out and go into panic mode! Amazing!!! Chuck PS: I can see it now ... Next week they will be selling tee shirts that say "I Survived the Blizzard of 2004"

Actually, even here in Michigan, the first snowfall brings out some very bad driving. People just not accustomed to it yet. When I lived in Houston years ago, it snowed once for the first time in what they said was eight years. The accumulation didn't even stick to the pavement and was a dusting on the grass. All schools were closed. I was amazed. Then someone mentioned that early in the morning when it was coldest, there might be ice on the roads when school buses were driving and picking up children. They did not want children on the roads at that time because of drivers and perhaps lack of confidence of the school bus drivers. It made sense. The city doesn't have a plan for dealing with ice or snow on the roads except to get city workers (which I saw) shoveling sand off the back of a filled pick up truck. That is dangerous, but funny. First snowfall here in Michigan we have really stupid accidents on the road. After that, people make the extra time they need to get to work at a safer speed.

Hey Chuck, I don't know about North Carolina, but here in Tennessee at the first sign of snow, everyone is required to go to WalMart, Kroger, etc and buy out all the milk, eggs and bread. I don't know why. It must be in our DNA or something. LMAO Wish it would snow a couple of feet, though. Got enough canned stuff to feed 3 families--ask Leesa. She says I might be part squirrel. LMAO

OMG LMFAO!!!!!!! I can't wait till I live somewhere where 2 inches of snow is considered a "blizzard"! Ahhhhhh dreaming of warm weather and not having to worry bout frozen water pipes! (Right now all our pipes are froze except the hot in the bath) Sam already tried to thaw them with boiling water and towels, then tried his torch (BIIIIIGGGG mistake almost lit our house on fire!) Now he's getting ready to go try it with blow dryers (boiling water and a blow dryer usually works so keeping my fingers crossed no pipes burst till then) P.S. my poor husband is already cold to the bone, had to fix the bubblers at a pond he put in over the summer today and fell through the ice (was told there was a min of 5 inches there but obviosly was not) Thankfully it was a shallow pond!

snow whats that... here a few years ago they shut down the railway lines because of leaves on the tracks.... Tarann I might be wrong but you'd probably be better using water that is not boiling as im sure it freezes quicker if it's boiling....so warm water might be better at defrosting your pipes...is that right or wrong..? curious Hey Chuck how TF are you...

Jes a hint .. Sometimes you can prevent the water from freezing if you leave it turned on a trickle all night. Moving water takes MUCH longer to freeze. And if it does freeze, you have fewer ruptured pipes. You can also put a work light, with a BIG bulb in your crawl space or area near the pipes. That generates enough heat to help keep the freezing away. Sorry, it is a lot like closing the barn door AFTER the cows git out, but might help next cold snap you get. Chuck

Hey.........you can buy "heat tapes" too. When I lived in Whitehorse in the Yukon, we had heat tapes wrapped around all of our pipes, including the oil from the tank to the furnace. Join them or whatever and plug them in - just hope the hydro doesn't go off. Gayle.

Minus ten last night with 17" of snow. Still not much snow for us. 1 degree as I type. About minus 17 or 18 C I think. Can't wait for a real storm. Charlie

Yeah we had the water on a trickle in all the sinks and the tub, but the damn things still froze. But good idea bout the light chuck.....gonna tell Sam that one in the AM. Also heat tape was used on the pipes here a long time ago (b4 I lived here) and they somehow caught the insulation on fire. So no heat tape anymore lol. I think this place just wants to give in and die (by fire apparently)

Okay, ya think it is funny that the inland had 2 inches of snow and everything closed, well let me tell you about the dumb flatlanders on the coast. Now everybody I am just 2 hours away from Chuck and Deb and I saw it snow for about 1/2 hour. Nothing even touched the ground. On Thursday night, they announced schools would be closing at noon because of the blizzard. I went out Friday morning because that is grocery shopping day. The store closest to my house didn't have any milk or bread. So I had to take my happy ass to Walmart for these items. Walmart was out of water. A lady said to me I bought alot of water in case the electricity goes out and the pipes freeze. I am from WV, now I know about snow and cold. I have never heard of pipes freezing in weather that never got below 25. In WV schools only close if the governor calls for a state of emergency, usually involving 12 or more inches of snow. So, I am in shock at what happens when these flatlanders here someone mutter the word SNOW!!!! Oh yeah, I still haven't worn a winter coat yet this year. I don't think it has been cold enough yet. Paige Still wishing for at least 12 inches. 12 inches of snow that is!
