Hospital Update

Hi everyone, Here's my update for the day... My New Daily Persistent Headache is down to a 7 (more on this in a minute), and then I got 3 cluster attacks today. Still better than the 6 before, right?? We're slowly getting there, but getting the NDPH down is crucial. Tonite they started a few different things, and I think my headache is at a 6 now. Yay! The only other problem is that now my Picc Line has a clot in it. Don't know what that means exactlu except they have me on blood thinnes. OK bback to bed! Love to all! ~Lizzie

A PICC is a long, flexible tube that is put into a vein in your arm and threaded up into a large vein just above your heart. It is used for giving fluids or drug treatment into your bloodstream. PICC stands for "Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter". A PICC works on the same principle as a "drip" but it can stay in for much longer - sometimes several months. The end of your PICC sits in a large vein just above your heart so there is plenty of blood rushing past it to dilute the drugs and take them safely into your bloodstream. A PICC allows us to give you repeated or continuous treatments without having to keep finding a vein. You can go home with the PICC in, and usually blood samples can be taken from it without having to use a needle each time. Some PICC's have just one line or "lumen" while others have two - a bit like a road tunnel with two lanes. This allows us to give more than one drug at once or to take blood while fluids are running. I'm pain in the ass Fewer CH attacks? Can't beat that. Good luck and let us know how it's going. Charlie

I don't know about the picc line, but a port can stay indefinately as long as it is cleaned properly. I never heard of a picc going home with you. Gotta go read now.

Hi everyone, Thanks so much for all the PF vibes and thoughts! I can't tell you how much it means to turn on the computer and read all your messages! Charlie, is this your picc line info site? http://www.thefurrymonkey.co.uk/picc.htm I had heard they could stay in for awhile, and you could even go home on them to do IV antibiotics, but never knew they stayed in for months! Well, my picc line will be lucky if it makes it thru the week with the way this baby is acting up! I really need it to stay in because the word from the doc today is that if they lose the picc, my only options are IM injections or discharge as is. So we're hoping they can keep it working! My nurse just went to get a heparin flush because one port of it seems a little cloggy. *eek* Keep your fingers crossed for me! Thanks again for the messages! Unsolved, I hope you are getting some relief too!!!!! PF 2 all Love, Lizzie
