what my neuro said

I got to see the neuro today.  He thought the 240mg of verap was good for me now, especially since I have had more attacks since I last saw him in January - which he thought strange as I should finally be coming out of cycle.  Also, I talked to him about O2 therapy and even brought him some stuff to read up on about it.  We talked a little about it and he basically said that he wasn't too familiar with it, but wanted to read up more on it before giving the definite OK.  I guess that's better than NO   Roll Eyes

Oh yeah, I also finally went and got the Trex Injections.  This whole time, it was me not wanting them only because I fear needles - well, not really.  But the thought of injecting myself was the scary part.  I got over that once I realized that it wasn't a syringe but an auto-pen.  My one question about the Injectables is this:  he wrote a scrip for 12 injectables a month.  I'm not complaining and my prescrip plan (United Healthcare) actually filled it (where they would only give me 6 nasal sprays a month).  Is this a typical amount that are prescribed?  Do most people get this many a month?  I'm just curious as to what other insurance companies allow.

Sounds like you found a great neurologist. One that isn't afraid to learn something new.

12 auto pens a months? That is more than most get.
Click the 'imitrex tip' button on the left side of the screen to learn how to make the 12 stretch to 36.

sure does sound like a good neuro.. as far as the injections go.. my neuro has perscribed everytime Ive asked.. its whether the insurance company is willing to pay it.. Mine only allows 2 per month.. thats 4 shots total.. the rest I pay for if I want them bad enough. I do use the imitrex tip to double and triple my script.. Good luck

I thought the imitrex tip would be harder than it really was, especially since it required me to stick myself.  But I tried it for the first time this afternoon.  Think it was about a Kip4 before I decided to shoot up, but once I did it - 15 minutes later (which is good for me because the nasal spray took 45 minutes to an hour) I was virtually PF.  How great that felt!

I do think I'm pretty lucky with the neuro.  At least he's willing to listen to me and take what I say into consideration.  I'm going to keep pushing for that O2, but I will give him a few days to read up on some stuff before I call him back.  Oh yeah, I'm clueless here so please forgive me - but, once I get the scrip for the O2, where do I go to get it filled?

;D ;D I have to agree with Jack(2Late) here! I can't believe that any Neurologist in this day and age has no clue about O2 therapy, It's been the standard first step treatment for over 30 years.
Even if your Neuro seems like a good educated Doctor and if he's a Neuro, I'm sure he is, but this thing about the Not Knowledgeable about O2 in the treatment of headaches sounds almost unbelievable.
I would ask your neuro where he has been for the past 30 years, as the only thing as far as O2 therapy that has changed is the Flow Amount recommended for different types of headaches.
Every Modern Hospital in the world knows that the very first thing to do in the Ambulance is crank the O2 up as high as it will pump until they can get you to the ER. JMHO    Pappy

hey maggie_may: glad to hear you're getting some relief with the Imitrex and hope your neuro gives you the Rx for o2....if you need more *bullets* let me know.......I'm still working on the o2 button and will include information on how to fill the prescriptions and what to ask for.

Meanwhilst, *when* you get the Rx, you will take it to a Medical Supply house that has oxygen bottles, masks, tubing, bubblers (for humidifying the air), etc. These places usually sell/rent wheel chairs, hospital beds and the like.

Make sure you get a set-up with a NONREBREATHER mask (with the BAG) and a regulator that will deliver at least 15 (fifteen) liters/minute.....Good luck!!!

It is pretty strange that he had to read up on the O2 stuff - though he's pretty new to the field.  That's still no excuse.  But lucky me, just got off the phone with him (on his off day!) and he said it wouldn't be a problem to write me up a scrip.  Told me that he just wanted to read up on some things and flow rates before the definite yes, which sounded more like he was back-peddaling to me.  But anyway.  He told me to come by tomorrow and pick up the scrip.  Fabulous  Grin  I know where I'll be heading after work tmw!
