Hello:

Went to see my doc this week.  Had to get some new prescriptions and a referral to see a neuro.  After two minutes with him... Bam... I had myself a Kip 10 right there in his office.  In twenty years of visiting doctors for my CH problems, I had never ever had an attack when I was on the spot.  It scared the living daylights out of him (he doesn't know much about CH).

Since I was there to talk him into prescribing me some O2 (which I have never tried - I feel like such a moron!!!), he decided to try it right there on the spot.  Problem is, I had no idea what a non-rebreathable mask looks like (he wasn't sure either).  So he plugged me with this cheap little mask and 6-7 liters per minute and told me to lie down and not move (during a Kip 10!!! forget it, I don't have that much control...).  So I tried it for 15 minutes - no success.  But no way am I giving up!  Ann, she's great and has given me tons of good advice, has told me that Jonny posted a picture showing what a non-rebreathable mask looks like.  Does anyone know where I can see that?

I can't believe how hard it is for me to get some O2.  I think I am going to have to start kicking ass pretty soon  Sad

Have a great week-end all!

Hi Das,

It's not really that I live in the middle of nowhere (in fact I live in the same city as you ;D - Really!).  It was only two years ago that I learned about O2 (through this site).  My cycle ended without having the chance to try it and now that I am back on the pain wagon, I have been wanting to try it.  As I said, I finally got myself a Neuro referral this week and I should be ready for my next cycle.

I guess I am trying to say it's more my fault than my doc or the place I live.  I mostly have myself to blame!

Take care Das.  Go Habs Go... Oups!!! Too late for that...

Yo Jonny,

Thanks a lot for the pic.  The mask my doc gave me did look like that (he's a GP - not a CH expert at all- I was there to get a referral to see a neuro).

I was a little discouraged that it didn't work.  I told him that 6-7 liters per minute was probably too low but he wouldn't turn it up (which is why I want to see a neuro).  Or maybe, I didn't give it enough time (15 minutes)?  Anyway, I am very anxious to try it again... I thing I gained 3 pounds with just my Imitrex shots this week!

Have a good one!

For your convenience, we long ago stole the salterlabs photo and you'll find it on the OUCH Medications page under Oxygen.

miCHel,

I find that O2 works quick and always for me as long as I breath it at 100%. The easiest way to be asured of this is to put the plastic tube in my mouth and turn the regulator up to inhale at a fairly fast rate. When my lungs are full I turn the regulator off, wait a few sec, exhale and start again. I always get partial relief on the first or second breath and full relief in less than five minutes.  This way you don't waste any oxygen.

My son has CH also and he thought that O2 didn't help until he tried it this way.

Good Luck

My cycle time should be upcoming.....starting to get just a few too many of them shadow scares.....and O2 is what I want from my doc this time.......hoping it will work so that I don't need to rely so much on my imitrex shots.

Anyway, thanks, your info provided here helped a lot and made it much easier to find.

Michel,

Here's is what you should do next. Call La Clinique de Migraine de Montreal: 514.337.0432. As I have said many times, don't let the name fool you. They have neuros that deal only with CHs.

Good Luck, and don't waste your time with Docs that think they know what they're doing. Make sure they know. CMM knows.

Hey guys!

Great info!  Thanks a lot.  Finally got myself a neuro appointment... June 16th.  Das, have you ever heard of a Dr Bellavance?  He's supposed to know a lot about CH?  I am going to call CMM, see if they can fit me in sooner.  I've been in this cycle for five weeks so I am looking (praying would be a better word) at a break in two to three weeks... hopefully.

One word about my doc, he's very cool cause he admits he knows very little about CH so I basically tell him what I want and he gives it to me.  I haven't pushed hard enough for O2 cause I didn't know exactly what to ask for.  You can bet I will try again this week.  In the meantime, I am shooting myself with Imitrex as if there was no tomorrow.  As someone who knows told me : "Fuck the consequences!" Pardon my English Wink  So far, it's working great with little side effects (except for my bank account... OUCH... but that's the least of my problems right now).  But I know I must substitute it as much as possible with O2.

Thanks again for the support!  You guys are great!

Not,

Zip says if you build it he will make a button for it.

For the pic of the mask you could add a link, I think the OUCH site has a pic of a mask you could link to.

For those of you who haven't tried O2 or are just thinking about it, PLEASE make it your top priority to get it. I'm sure there are a few people who it may not work for but for most it is a life saver!!!! It has to be used correctly....for me....10L/min for 15 minutes, non-rebreather mask. If I get it right when the attack starts, the O2 will abort the attack 95% (or more) of the time by itself....no imitrex needed. I use it sometimes for shadows too.

Question for jonny......
For non-rebreather masks...the medical supply has vented and non-vented. Yours looks to have two bladders instead of one bladder and one side that has just holes...am I making sense? I remember a while back on the MB that someone said they just taped over the side with the holes. Does non-vented mean it has two bladders instead?

Two bladders, they allow no room air in but allow your exhale to escape the mask.

If you lose the bladders (They fall off sometimes) you can tape the holes shut and lift the mask alittle when exhaling.

BTW: I have never seen a non-rebreather with holes just on one side....LOL, in the last three yrs ive bought more than 30 of them and mailed them to three different countries....LOL

Speaking of stealing things... next time while waiting in a treatment room at the ER... take a look around the room for a box labeled "non-rebreather masks" Smiley

Steve aka Not4Hire posted on 10-28-02 how to use oxygen properly…. …
that date isn’t in the archive but maybe he still remembers what he wrote.

posted by jonny on 9-27-02: You can’t hook a non-rebreather mask to a welding 02
regulator, you have to have a medical reg converted to fit a welding 02 tank. That takes a 1/4" NPT (National Pipe Thread) stem and a 540s connector, no gas house will do this for you cause of liability.
