I could not beleive what i heard Angry Shocked Angry ( montreal ) last night. AS an "AMERICAN", i am very offended.
Now i know that arena probably holds 15 - 20,000 people ( just guessing ). My question is,is that what you canadian's think of America? To me there is no differance
between "boo-ing" our national anthem and "burning" our flag. Please dont apologize for what happened last night ( and say they were drunk ). Please answer the question, "IS THAT WHAT CANADA THINKS OF US" ?

About a year ago, the Detroit Pistons played a home game against the Toronto Raptors. The fans booed during the Canadien national anthem. I don't know if it was just enthusiastic fans showing their support for the Pistons, or if there was some other reason. If memory serves correct, this took place not too long after Canadien soldiers were killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan.
It is not justified in either case.

No, Lenny - this is NOT how most Canadians feel at all.  What you're seeing in the media are the extreme cases, just as some of your citizens are participating in demonstrations and perpetuating the terrorism as BobP says.
I'll probably get beat up by my eastern brethren (and sistren?) for this, but out here in the west - we are totally ashamed of and disgusted by the actions (or lack thereof) of our government and the now few extremists that follow them (the concentrations of Liberals is MUCH higher in the East...i.e. Montreal).  Our slime minister has resigned, but he's given 18 month's notice of his intent.  Ample time to f*** this country up before he leaves, if you ask me.  The average Canadian these days has NO voice at all, when it comes to how our "Government" reacts.
No, Lenny - we stand beside you in this effort -- whether we believe in the act of war or not (me, personally, I hate the killing of innocents)-- we totally understand and respect the American 'take charge' attitude and can't understand why our government hasn't sent our boys and girls in to help you.  In fact, I bet the majority of the people of Canada would support your efforts if you were to put Mr. Cretin next on your list of targets.   Embarassed

Please forgive me, Margi. It was not my intention to be insulting. I have family who moved to Canada from New York. I hold Canadiens in the highest regard. I live near Detroit and have been to Canada a number of times, and have only had positive experiences there. I have family in Buffalo, New York, and we prefer to go through Canada because it is so much nicer than going through th U.S. Every Canadien I have ever spoken with was very kind.

That said, I apologize for upsetting you. I regret the posting that, only because it has caused you distress.

As for the reasoning behind the post, I cite the following points, lifted directly from a website about Montreal.

Montreal is Canada's second-largest city, behind only Toronto. But with a mostly peaceful blend of French and English history and culture, Montreal is unique in Canada as well as North America.

For most tourists, the main problem in Montreal might be the language. All public signs are in French only, a law that was effected by a separatist political party who sadly never realized that the French culture is strong enough to survive without such rules. A quick brush-up on the directions and other key words and phrases would be beneficial for those driving, but otherwise, most people here speak both English and French and are happy to serve you in either language.

The two cultures of Montreal are not as apparent as they once were. Due to the rather restrictive nature of some language laws, many English speakers left the city. French is now the dominant language by far, but remnants of English culture are apparent in the architecture of many buildings.

Again, I offer you my sincerest apologies.

As a Canadian living in America, and having worked for years for the federal Canadian Government, and currently married to an active duty Air Force member of the US military, I EMPHATICALLY STATE THAT IS NOT THE OPINION OF THE GENERAL POPULOUS OF THE CANADIAN PEOPLE.

First off, please understand that the coverage the Canadians receive is not at all what the US receives.  On average, most Canadians can't even tell you what their gov't's official stand is.  Mr. Chretian, has stated they will not MILITARILY support the US.  THey do however support the liberation of Iraq, and do in fact have soldiers in the region.  Several of them trained here at Fort Drum before going.

Please keep in mind that the Canadian Armed Forces are MINIMAL in size and have stretched themselves quite thin by participating in the peace keeping actions in the balkans and in Afghanistan.

The Canadian people have little to no room to enforce or encourage policy.  About the only way they CAN show what they think is in protest.  Both countries, the US and Canada have aspects of their governments are that are very lacking to say the least.

Do you honestly believe that the booing of the national anthem in Montreal is any worse than the burning of the flag right here in the US??  Do you believe that the hollywood stars speaking out so vehemently is less of an insult than a very SMALL group of people protesting in Canada?

Canada is undergoing some very difficult political times.  So is the US.  Don't slam CAnadians, and don't slam Americans.  The war is on, ignore the protesters everywhere and get behind the troops.  I've personally witnessed protests in CAnada that involved serbian CAnadians burning the Canadian Flag, while my husband was in a camp 10 miles from the serbian border trying to save his ass when migs flew over.  Don't get me going on protestors of either country.  I will take them all and shove their respective flags down their throats and pull it out their ass.  Just as there are misinformed and mis understood protesters in the US there are in Canada as well.

Getting down off my soap box before I get in trouble.

Thanks for the apology Curtis.  I was more insulted by the comparison of political feelings towards France at the moment, than the heritage of our nation.  I was worried that Americans are thinking that we are siding with the French and, we sure aren't.  There may be an under-current of Anti-Americanism in the extremists groups here, but they sure don't speak for the majority of us.

ANYWAYS...again, thanks.  Smiley

Oh, and for your useless trivia file, the French that is spoken in Canada is "Quebecois" - very different from Parisian French.  For example, "potato" in Parisian French is "pomme de terre" (apple of the earth), whereas Quebecois is "potate".  We actually do have some original and logical ideas here in Canada.  Wink

p.s.  OK, Cat said it WAY better than I ever could.  She's exactly right in every word of her post.  You GO, girl.

Cjohnson,
It is in the best interest NOT to get into the political aspect of Quebec in relation to the rest of Canada.  There are years and years of political referendums that precede most of what is in that province right now.  Canada is OFFICIALLY a bilingual country.  Many people have followed the differences very closely.  The final referendum on Quebec that was voted by the entire country was a resounding and unanimous vote that Quebec IS a part of Canada and that seperation is NOT wanted.

Think of it this way, a brother and sister in the same family can fight with each other, call each other names and beat each other up, but if an outsider does, they will come together and whoop ass. Wink

Lenny:

As much as I have tried to stay away from any of the 'political/war' threads, I feel I have to say something about this.  I wouldn't want to alienate any Central/Eastern Canadian that agrees with your effort, regardless of how the Liberals in Central/Eastern Canada treat the West. (I don't really want to get started on that.  I could go on for hours!!!)

I agree with Margi, as do all of my co-workers that have heard the news.  It has been a hot topic at work this morning.

I am REALLY pissed off about that childish display, but am not surprised by it when you consider where it came from.  (sorry to anyone from that part of Canada that doesn't agree with the effort)  I don't think (and
really hope) you would ever hear/see a reaction like that from Western Canada and would hate to be included in such a 'group'.

Regardless of what some think, the US is our closest friend and ally and everyone I've talked to already today is thoroughly ashamed/embarrassed about this.

Grant

P.S.   The Canadians are finally thinking about helping America with the war against Iraq.  We have pledged 2 of our biggest battle ships, 600 ground troops and 6 fighter jets.  After the exchange rate, the Americans ended up with 2 Mounties, 1 canoe and a bunch of flying squirrels.

BTW, when have Americans ever really cared what Canada says anyways?
LOL!  ;D

I didn't think it was that big of a deal when Canada's national anthem was booed at the Pistons game, and I don't consider the booing of America's national anthem in Montreal to be a big deal. In fact, I don't know anyone who thought either of these events would impact the relationship between the 2 countries.

As far as I am concerned, and I have been in and through Canada a number of times, the U.S. and Canada are pretty much the same. Except Canada has nicer people and better beer, but lousy smokes and crappy football.

Wow.. I don't know where to start. I am a Montrealer and first, I will say that the people at the hockey game are NOT a microcosm of Canada, Montreal or Quebec. Second, during last year's playoffs, the Canadian anthem was booed in NY and Philadelphia. Shit happens. If you are going to go off and get upset every time someone boos your national anthem, this world will not last very long.

Isn't the whole Iraq conflict about lack of understanding and tolerance??? Don't add fuel to the already out of control fire. Think before you make a comment and as Bob said: "Who gives a shit what happens at a hockey game." ...of course, unless the Canadiens are about to win a Stanley Cup..then I give a shit.

If we are all able to live and let live this war and most senseless conflict would never occur. Of course, when it comes to injustice, something must be done, but let's all just get along people.

I thank you all for your comments.
For whatever reason  ???,i cant figure this quote thing out ( everytime i try it,all i get are tiny lines.
As far as your question goes ( catlind ),you cant beleive that i compare booing the national anthem in
( montreal ) to people burning our flag in the U.S.( I DO ). Now i have a question for you, where do you get the balls to compare americans burning an american flag in the U.S.( were they americans ? ) to people boo-ing the american national anthem from abroad ( non -americans in "montreal" ) with all the anti-american bullshit going around, yeah i dont like it. I really dont think you are qualified to tell me what an american should feel.
As far as your other statemant ( hollywood stars ) wearing their pins, they are americans ( i dont have to like it and I DONT ) then again they are AMERICANS.

As an American i do get offended by a non-american talking out of their ass.

BTW - FUCK what the hollywood stars ( as you call them ) have to say!!! Most of them dont know if their male or female. Now its back to work ( i spent my lunch on this site ).
