Space travel is dangerous enough but the shuttle program has been screwed up, altered, cut back, and made a political football. If the astronuats weren't such exceptional people the thing would probably never get off the ground.  Horrible such talented and nice people were sacrificed.

It was a crumby day all round.

Is new technology needed?.......YES
should the space program be halted?.....NO
all politics aside.....if you are going to shoot my azz into space allow me to float around up there for half a month, I damn well expect to be notified of ALL possible problems before re-entry. that is where the fault is.  Nasa has an extremely good track record to date, even with the new trauma, accidents will and should be expected, why point fingers?
If you are going to find fault in this, find it in the fact that there is no rescue or repair contingency for astronaughts in flight.

NASA is interesting... it is a hybrid of military, government and the scientific communities.  It's not your average company, it's NASA.

Like any responsible and professional organization, NASA will sieze this opportunity to force itself to be better, no matter what.  Heads will roll, just as they do when great football teams lose that championship game, and the organization will endure and improve.  There is simply no other way to go, and nobody knows this better than NASA.

Did people make mistakes?  Hell yes.  They do on every mission.  They are going to wish it hadn't happened on this particular day, because it doesn't matter if your at fault or not, if you made a mistake this time it's probably going to cost your job.  In the end, that's probably OK, since perfection is the only acceptable level when your going to hurl humans into space and bring them back home.

I just hope we aren't grounded for close to three years like last time.

Is it possible they knew of the dangerous situation for the landing.....with the information they had that somea the tiles may of got knocked off at takeoff and all ? I keep wondering if it was one of those deals where they had NO CHOICE but to hope and pray that what happen'd 'DIDN'T'....did the astronauts know the danger they were in. Gawd that would of been an aweful situation if they knew the possiblities.....maybe I've jus  watch'd too many sci-fi movies.... but I have watched several with that same situation at hand. Pam

The shuttle(s) is built by contractors, all out to make a profit.
