I agree this is a sad event that these 7 people died. But why is it being considered any more tragic than the seemingly monthly or bi-monthly plane crashes where 23 people die? 18 people die? etc. And we never give those passengers a second thought. I actually am really curious about this.

Ted -- A good question. It think it's because the shuttle program is the frontier, the bleeding edge of human endeavor. These are folks engaged in a very risky business, the main purpose being the pursuit of knowledge and the advacement of all humanity. All our dreams ride with the shuttle astronauts, no matter the nationality, politics, ideology. They put their lives on the line for all of us... That's why, I think, I felt that chill again. It's been riding up and down my spine since yesterday morning...the same way it did when the Challenger went down, the same way it did on 9-11... And that's why the shuttles must continue to fly... It's unlikely they'd need or want an over-weight, flabby middle-aged guy with no useful skillks, but I'd ride the next flight in a second. -tommyD

Ted heres the answer found in the flag code.. One must be a government official and as the majority on Columbia were government personell they were considered officials deemed by the president to be so. .............................................. ............................"By order of the President, the flag shall be flown at half-staff upon the death of principal figures of the United States Government and the Governor of a State, territory, or possession, as a mark of respect to their memory. In the event of the death of other officials or foreign dignitaries, the flag is to be displayed at half-staff according to Presidential instructions or orders, or in accordance with recognized customs or practices not inconsistent with law. In the event of the death of a present or former official of the government of any State, territory, or possession of the United States, the Governor of that State, territory, or possession may proclaim that the National flag shall be flown at half-staff. The flag shall be flown at half-staff thirty days from the death of the President or a former President; ten days from the day of death of the Vice President, the Chief Justice or a retired Chief Justice of the United States, or the Speaker of the House of Representatives; from the day of death until interment of an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, a Secretary of an executive or military department, a former Vice President, or the Governor of a State, territory, or possession; and on the day of death and the following day for a Member of Congress". As used in this subsection - (1) the term 'half-staff' means the position of the flag when it is one-half the distance between the top and bottom of the staff;

jonny and cootie; No disrespect intended here But the flag should not be nailed but allowed to hang free................. also again from the flag code ....................... (a) Display on buildings and stationary flagstaffs in open; night display It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed twenty-four hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness. May they all rest in peace. Knowing they have touched the finger of their Gods.

Shall I scrape the egale with stars and stripes in its wings off my chest cause the code says its wrong? Fuck codes!!!!!! .............................jonny

Jonny . yep the code does say it cant be worn as clothing. nothing about the tatoos though.. Not that I even own a flag mind you. I too believe in american freedom and The flag represents that freedom. Maybe it should overrule. But when the flag is not properly "respected" some would consider this an act of "treason".............. I AM NOT ONE, My father was. Hell I'm just an old hippie who had to hear it all.... The flag is kinda like a woman sometimes we worship them and at times theres just too many damn rules. But it is our flag and so it has great representation and deserves the respect it can be given. .......... Kiss glass, yours would not be considered a flag as its painted on and merely becomes art at that point.

I still don't get it. There were about 115 flights. 2 ended in tragedy. That puts it under 2 percent of a dangerous mission. We sit here and say they risked there lives knowingly. But they walked upon the shuttle as concerned as we are getting on a plane... knowing it wasn't much of a risk. So why do we mourn them more than others? Because they're in the military and risking their lives, as was suggested? Well, we've lost people in the war on terrorism. And I've yet to see anyone ask us to fly flags at half-mast. So, that answer doesn't work either. I am still at a loss t why their lives are considered better than anyone elses. I have asked others and only one other person was willing to give me an honest answer. We mourn them more than others because we think their lives are more important than a waitress'. Or plumber. Or a roofer. Or a...well, in my eyes... a corporate executive.
