It's 100% official...

..early last week I put in for a promotion. There is an open for a position a step up from mine at a sister newspaper in the next town over. There doesn't look to be any upward movement opening any time soon with the paper I'm at, and Gannett does like to promote from within. So Coming off a very good Quarter I put in for the position at the paper 20 minutes away. Looks as though I just may have it, as the GM called me today hoping that the weekend didn't change my mind about wanting the job. I talk to him Wed morning again, finalize the terms ect. We were supposed to have our monthly meeting Tuesday (before Matt and I meet) but after this appointment was set the monthly meeting date and time changed to the afternoon after Matt and I meet. These monthly meetings are used to talk about promotions and success stories within the paper. I'm ready to learn some new things, to have different challenges to step up to. What I'll miss is being hands on with the Our Voice Publication. Being on the Ad Quality committee. A number of my customers who I consider almost friends now. A number of my co-workers who are really fun people to work with. I won't miss being micromanaged. Being treated like a telemarketer when special (low revenue) projects come along. Being (mis) heard and not listened to. I have to take this opportunity to advance my career. To gain valueable experience that I can take farther either with the company or would proove useful in getting a different job down the line if need be. Just wanted to share and as I said it's not 100% official, but it's looking damn good.

Sounding pretty good, Pegg. An HR rep once told me, "You have to look out for yourself because nobody else will." Here's to looking out for yourself.

Thanks everyone. It's been a bit of a roller coaster ride there for just over a year now. No department manager from Feb. last year until Jan. of this year. There is also an open sales manager position at this paper, and I believe Matt is looking to fill that position from within as well. It came to my attention too that another sales rep there just sold his house, and he and his wife are moving to Appleton, so I'll be the only rep there who has a good base within the company to train for the sales manager position which is also open. Hell, the paper I'm with now made it fine for a year without a manager, I think this one can keep the job open till I can gain enough knowlege to move into that job as well. Who knows. But it's time for forward momentum in my life. I'm not one to thrive well under stagnation.

Just got the call with the official extension of the offer. Of course I took it. I'll post later tonight about everything, but I'm relieved.

So...Matt and I meet this morning. We talked for over an hour. Pretty much was a basic "how do I plan to approach this new position as the structure is so different than where I am at." Well that was a pretty easy question to answer, because Matt is the person who beta tested this structure at another paper first and it was found to be truely successfull. So who better to have managing and mentoring me in the learning process? I'm told NO in any given day to a sales pitch more over the phone than I will be in an outside position. Face to face I can read the eyes. Tell if it's simply fear that is keeping them from trying something new and innovative. The real story comes out in those types of sales calls. I can then come back the next day, or the next week, with all the reasons in black and white as to why they SHOULD invest in this program, or that specialty publication. Anyway, I'm looking forward to making this transition. I'm ready. I don't like RAP music, but in the words of Emenem: Success is my only mother fking option...failure is not. Thanks everyone for all your support. I know I can always count on this family for moral support.
