could use a little luck (update)

Well here is the basic scenerio I have an opportunity to go to work doing what I really love. (running into burning buildings) Tonight is the 1st phase, the civil service test. Now granted I should do ok on the test I need to kick butt! I have a few strikes going in. 1. 45 years old. 2. male 3. Caucasion 4. would take a pay cut. 5. did I mention 45? I have to compete for a physical job against 599 other applicants half my age. There is only 12 openings. Basicially I will need to get at least 95 to even be considered. I have studied but in my opinion not enough. every practice test I take I keep getting between a 85 and 90. My stress level is off the charts and the beast usually hits around 6:30 to 7:00 and the test starts at 6:30. Will need to consentrate and do a 200 question test in 2 hours. Oh did I mention I am a 45 year old cauc male going for a civil service job and a pay cut to boot. One would think with age I would get smarter. it does however have a better retirement and benefit plan, and I would not have to move half way across the country again. I just hope I can do the right thing and still do what I love doing. Wish me luck and I will update as able. Mike Goat Attack!

Good luck all fingers and toes crossed for you. Rob always wanted to be a police man. He joined at 41 having been turned down twice in his younger days. He finds the fitness harder but he gets it done, and all that learning can be a bit tougher when you are older, He also took a pay cut, but after 4 years brings home a lot more than if he had stayed where he was. He looks pretty good in uniform as well (I think) 45 is only a number with some twinges thrown in

I'm confused as to why you say number 2 and 3 are a "strike" against you. As for your age...you have been doing this as a volunteer for some time now, right? THAT is a big positive that you have going for you. Your passion about the job is also a big positive. Take whatever arsenal you have (Trex, energy drink, etc) into the test area. When starting the test take some deep breaths to calm yourself and just do your best Mike. You've got everyone here on your side sending you test-taking vibes. You've got it made. Linda

| I know people refuse to believe it but I have lost the same position 4 times because of 2, and 3. I had better test scores, better times on the agility test but they had to have a certian percentage of 2 and 3 so I got toasted the last time they claimed because of age but the opening was given to a female I used to date that barely passed the test and failed the physical agility but they made compensations for then she dropped out after 1 week. Its sad but happenes all of the time. Mike

I'm pretty sure you can do it, Mike. Age and treachery trumps youth and skill, you know. Go for it, I say. Kowabunga, eh? Best of luck, George
