Pictures from mini-vacation~more added~again

Jimbo and I were finally able to *coordinate* a weekend together, sol we headed south thru St. Francisville to the Leprosarium in Carville and then on down to Gonzales LA. I've processsed all the pics from Afton Villa Gardens and I'm getting through the others from yesterday and today. Should also have more tomorrow when we head home. Afton Villa Gardens are all that is left of the *plantation*, the house burned to the ground in 1963. In 1972, the Trimbles bought the plantation and spent the next 20 years restoring the gardens. Jimbo and I have decided that we want to go back when the azaleas and the daffodils are blooming. Here is the link that tells the history of the place and also gives a virtual tour of the gardens (not dial-up friendly). http://www.aftonvilla.com/index.asp Now, on to pictures (Jimbo has a whole lot too, but they are on his computer). (this bug was ever so kind as to pose for me) There are paths you can wander on for awhile. Flowers galore Anybody guess what this is? More to come as I get them processed (although I might have to take an extended nap after the supper I just ate).

Well, let's do the church first. This is a St. Gabriel's Catholic Church, built in 1769 and relocated to it's present location in St. Gabriel in 1772. Architecture and anthropology experts agree that about 73% of the original building remains. There is a graveyard behind the church, but the ground was really wet and Jimbo was getting hungry, so we didn't go to it.

BTW, all the albums are in the Carville album (within the next one and so on and I didn't realize it until this morning and it's too much effort to move them). On to the Leper colony . It is now on the grounds of the LA Natl. Guard Camp where the Youth Challenge program is located. Here's a *link* to the hospitals' history http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Hansen%27s_Disease_Museum The hospital is actually housed on what was originally Indian Camp Plantation. We stayed in the main house which was built in 1857 (Jimbo comes down here and teaches, so we were able to stay the night). Our room The rooms have the original ceilings and if you look at the railing at the top of the room (which is 8 feet), it will give you an idea of the height of the ceilings~Jimbo has a lot more pics of the inside). More pictures after I get home, need to finish packing and head out.

That is Spanish moss, Tanya. On to the hospital. This was originally opened as a hospital for patients with leprosy (at that time, people thought that it was extremely contagious). It was the only hospital of it's kind in the continental US. I wish that I could have taken pictures in the museum, but cameras weren't allowed. The Catholic chapel on the grounds. Me an my flowers This is part of the original hospital (it still has that *hospital smell*). There are/were over 2 miles of screened corridors bult on the oustide of the buildings since the patients were sensitive too the sun. You can walk forever. The *back* of the square The old ballroom where they held celebrations and dances (wonder what it takes to keep a floor waxed like that?). The Silo is the *club/bar* that the people who live/work here go to. It's actually an old barn that is attached to two silos. Shot inside the silo The graveyard where the patients and the priests/nuns who worked there are buried. Dusk The lake at the back of the property

Starting with a few from Houmas House~Houmas house is located on the Great River road. As with a lot of homes of this era, it was almost destroyed when owners could no longer keep the plantation up. The home was bought in 1940 and restored. It was used when filming *Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte* with Bette Davis. It has not reclaimed it's fame as "Crown Jewel of Louisiana's River Road". We did not tour the house (most of them won't let you take pictures inside and I've been in numerous antebellum homes, so *inside* doesn't interest me that much). So, here's a start (still processing pics too). The gardens The water *garden*. More to come!

Audubon Natl. Park and Oakley House. John James Audubon only spent 4 months at Oakley house~he was teaching the 12 year old daughter how to draw and paint. The house was built circa 1799. *Gus*, the official welcome turkey. according to the curator of the museum, Gus was dropped off about a year ago. It is obvious that he was either a pet or a 4-H project. Gus likes having his picture taken and his feathers stroked. Gardenia Paths to follow Slave cabin Notice how the fence is built Sugar cane press Every home raised all of it's own vegetables and herbs. Through the overhang of the grape arbor, you can see the garden. Care to take a *spin*? Louisiana Iris Audubon House Staircase Links to Jimbo's albums from the trip~he tried to take different pictures from me, so his are well worth taking the time to look at. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v323/Jimbo803/Afton%20Villa%20Gardens/ ?start=0 http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v323/Jimbo803/Audubon%20Park/ http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v323/Jimbo803/Carville/

I love the attention to detail in your photo's. Some of the things you notice like the way the fence was made and so on which makes u feel like we are right there with you. I have so got to go to Louisiana one day. I've always wanted to and I will. It fascinates me. The beauty and the savaragy (if that's a word!) is compelling. Civilisation is only a veneer with the land just biding it's time to reclaim it's own.. You capture that menace so well. Thank you for my little holiday here in front of the PC! Helen

Y'all did go look in the albums, right? There are a whole lot more than I have here, plus Jimbo's 3 albums. Helen, Thought about you when we were on our road trip. I'd love to take you on a road trip, maybe even get down to see SteveGeebe and Edna! There are still a lot of places that I want to visit in south LA. My next adventure will probably be the plantations along the great river road. Here are a few that Jimbo took. Afton Villa I don't know how I missed this little fella. Carville The *big house* (where we stayed) I stole his idea, this is his picture that he took orignally on another trip he took to Carville
