Probably not a big deal to anyone else...

...but I heard a very familiar birdsong this morning that I haven't heard in years. http://www.rivernen.ca/bird_17.htm (Click on the "clip" to get a .wav file of the song). In the midwest, where I grew up, we used to see house wrens (Troglodytes aedon) and hear them all the time. My father loved them--we always had a few wren houses scattered over the property, and invariably had nesting wrens around. I've never seen them in Boise before. I hung up a wren house this morning (they're cavity nesters) in the front yard, so I'm hoping... Haven't gotten any photos yet--but I will. Best wishes, George

Ah! The foreigners put on such airs Wearing the tangerine suits And their harlequin eyes. The pain they inspire Draws in harmonica melodies And the feathers of birds Which flame up at their touch. It all comes to light in the sheer Debonair. (Ellen)

it must be nice to hear birdsongs , over here all you can hear is the songs of the mocking birds and the damn rooster that the neighbor across the street got (the rooster does not know time well, starts singing about 4 am ) ...we are not supposed to have farm animals around here...I guess I can go and get a goat to keep my lawn short and no one should complain

Just took the laptop over to the window and played the .wav file a few times. Managed to attract the one outside to come over and take a look--got him to get within four feet of me. He was answering defiantly the whole time. "Who are YOU, and what the hell are YOU doing here?" Best, George

I love the song of the house wren, George. The wench has mosaiced several small bird houses around our property, and a couple of them always end up as shelter for a new family of house wrens. Such a happy sound.

I too, love the house wrens. How that giant happy song comes out of that tiny little body is amazing. I always thought their nesting habits mimicked humans. Dad picks the site, fills it full of nesting material and invites mom to look at it. If she approves, she promptly pulls EVERYTHING out of the site and puts in what SHE wants . . . . They are wonderful bug eaters and we welcome them with open arms every spring.

We had one nest in our palm tree two years ago, It was great watching it and we could see the babies when they hatched. They never used the nest again last year which is a shame. The morning is full of those songs, also blackbirds (I think but not sure) when I leave for work, if the sun is shining it gives the soul a bit of a kick start to the day

I am interested in a pic when you get one George. What kind of bird is this? I do not think I have ever heard of that one before, but maybe we call it something else here in Canada.

We had plenty of Wrens around our property in a suburb of Cleveland, but my favorits songs came from the Blue Bird and Purple Martins. Neither of these are well known elsewhere and the Blue Bird is often mistaken for Blue Jay. Do you have pictures and habits of these two? Thanks
