I have just watched a documentry on the new American  Aircraft Carrier   -  USS Ronald Regan. what can I say but WOW.

6000 personnel on board, it is one big  boat and that is one big crew, I wouldn.t like to be a dish washer on there.

It finished with it sailing into port at San Diago, all the crew lined up along all the decks with the family and friends swamping the docks and quays. It is one impressive sight and made made me get very choked up.

PBS is running something tonight....here anyway... on carriers. It's a documentary of life aboard. I wonder if it is the same thing? It's supposed to be on later in the evening, EST.

The PBS special was just aired. It is called Carrier. It is a 10 part series on life aboard a carrier(of which I can attest to). The USS ronny raygun was commissioned 2 years ago I do believe. So, that show you watched is just a little bit dated.

I was on the USS Theodore Roosevelt CVN-71. The Reagan is a Nimitz class in size only. It's layout is so different. We did a little work-up deployment on her just after she got to San Dog. There's only 3 elevators, that confused me for sure. I was only on Reagan for a day. I get sent to shore duty just before she sailed...pffft.

My time on the Big Stick (what we affectionately called the Roosevelt) was some of the best days of my life. I just might write a book about it. I've been thinking about that for a long time now. A working title could be like "Shooters and checkers to the Line" or something like that. Ok I've rambled enough

"But I don't want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.

"Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."

"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.

"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn't have come here."

Teddy was a big proponent of the navy.  He started writing "The Naval War of 1812" at age 21 while still at Harvard with technical help from his mother's side uncle, a famous Confederate naval officer.  A good book still available today.
Pres. McKinley appointed him assistant secretary of the navy but he was in full charge of affairs expanding the navy greatly from fifth in combat power to second to Britain as president to protect our shores, sending his White Fleet around the world to show our cornerstone of foreign policy to all. "I never take a step in foreign policy unless I am assured that I shall be able to carry out my will by force."  (the big stick guy Wink )
And built the Panama Canal so we could be a two-ocean navy, which was finished on the eve of WWI.

He'd be proud.

Teddy did indeed have a helluva lot to do with the "White Squadron" which no doubt had several meanings. It was impressive.

The PBS thing is great and it was done aboard the Nimitz.

Great story Eric and thanks.

Yep, peace required preparedness, there were several reasons for an untested navy's voyage.  To dramatize our coming of age, assess the readiness of coaling stations, test operative strength, general efficiency, and much target practice.  About eighteen battleships, eight armored cruisers, six torpedo-boat destroyers, and a few coaling ships.
Congress was unwilling to provide the money for the 46,000 mile voyage, so Teddy told them he had just enough money in the military budget to send the fleet out, it'll just have to stay out there in foreign waters until money was forthcoming for its return.  Congress swiftly gave in.
