Earthquake
« on: Apr 18th, 2008, 7:32am »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

I woke up at 4:37 am because my house was shaking and wouldn't stop.

I opened up my bedroom window last night before I went to bed.  When the earthquake woke me up it was silent.  As soon as it stopped, the birds started singing again.

Did anyone else feel the earthquake this morning?

I woke up around 4:30, didn't feel it, but I think that's probably what woke me up.

It was a 5.2.

If you were near the epicenter you'd definatley know it!  5.2 will get your attention.

Looks like the aftershock was a 4.5.

Proper earthquake etiquette says first you hollar yehaaa, rock 'n roll, then get under something sturdy or brace yourself in a doorway in case the roof collapses.  Of course, the best is to get outside but not near any power lines that may come down.

When the shaking stops, you go back in and find any unbroken bottles of booze.  Take them out in your front yard and party with the neighbors.

The 5.2 was probably the major quake, the aftershocks will go on for days and get smaller over time.

Guess you folks just had another jolt!

In 2002 I was at my camp in the mountains and got blasted at 6:20 in the morning with a 5.2.  It was a blast like I never heard before and it just seemed to emminate from within you.  No rumble to that one!  The eppicenter was barely a mile away.

Hope there was no damage to you folks!

Completely DISREGARD the below.

Duh!  If it's 4:37 in Illinois, I would be at 5:37, not 3:37.  Wouldn't I???

Anyway, SOMETHING bothered the dad gummed dog.

Please pardon my stupidity.

Reports said that it could be felt as far away as Atlanta.

I'm in NC.  I didn't feel a thing, but my dog did!

If it was at 4:37 AM CDT, we would be at 3:37 EDT.  Right around that time, I was awakened not by shake, rattle, or roll, but by my 80 lab, standing in the middle of our bedroom floor whining very loudly.  I got out of bed, and the minute I moved, he bolted to the French doors in our bedroom wanting OUT!

I thought this was very odd behavior because that dog sleeps like a log in our bed with us, only getting up during the night if I get up during the night.

I sure hope everyone in the near area had no damage.

I didn't feel a thing. My boss, who lives in Springfield, got woke up by it. We've been feeling aftershocks since this morning.

Our office is upstairs inside a plant that uses lots of presses, and when they are all running, there is a low level of vibration going on, but that doesn't make my computer monitor shake.

They say there will be aftershocks for the next couple of days. It was centered about on the Illinois/ Indiana border, near Evansville. It's pretty flat around here, so the shaking can be felt for quite a distance.

It's quite the topic of conversation. We haven't had one since 1987. (What were you doing when the earthquake hit?... That was THE question back then)

I was in my bathroom and the shower doors began to shake. At first I thought my ceiling exhaust fan was causing it...then I went to my office that is adjacent to my bathroom and didn't see a thing.

Started going for my 9mm because I thought someone was trying to break in. Wasn't that either.

I was half asleep and started thinking maybe my house is haunted  Grin Grin

Yeah, I know...gimme a break...I was half asleep.

Went back to bed and didn't find out it was an earthquake until I got to work.

There is a fault that runs from Missouri thru Illinois, but earthquakes are extremely uncommon here.

It was indeed a weird feeling !!!

Well, just so long as it isn't a precursor to another one of these:

The effects of that one were profound--and there are a lot more people around than there were in 1811.

No, that is not necessarily bad info.  Seismic waves travel much more efficiently through the older and less complex rocks that make up the crust of Central North America than they travel in CA, packing a much greater punch.

The reason we felt it in Milwaukee is that, just under the surface, there's nothing but bedrock between here and there. Transmits shock waves very efficiently. Doesn't happen that way in California - lots of disruptions in the underlying formations.
