Pain Treshold of a CH sufferer

  3 months ago today I fell through some icy water and sprained my right ankle, walked 3 1/2 miles back to the car and went to the VA Hospital the next day," Just a bad sprain John" the ER Doctor so easily said.
I have been walking, riding my motor cycle and walking in the creeks here fishing, albieit in pain.
Well just for giggles I decided to go back in and have it checked again, Broken the whole time! Next!

I can really relate. I have had my gallbladder out, my rotator cuff repaired, back surgery and knee surgery, and an emergency oopendenctamy. My drs all have great appreciation of what I endure for ch pain considering all these ailments where nothing in pain compared to ch. My drs have stated all these things individually should have droped me to my knees in pain but it didn't because not as bad as ch.

I've related a couple of anecdotes to this group. A 3 years ago this July, a 6 foot grass cutter ment to be towed behind a tractor, was on a hoist. It slipped it's chain and rolled up on my left foot.
I sat down, didn't say a word, holding my foot. I took a few steps and said that I would like to borrow my boss' cell phone. I called my wife, explained what happened and that we were going to head to the ER.
I walked to my car and drove home. I picked her up and drove to the ER. Walked from the car to the desk where they take your name and find out if they can help you. I said my name is Raymond Schwartz, my left foot is broken, may I have a wheel chair please.
Apparently, if you break your 5th metatarsel trasversely just in front of the end of the bone, it's about the worst break in the foot. It's called a Jones Fracture.
They x-rayed it and confirmed that it was broken. They asked me to rate my pain from 0-10. I explained that I have cluster headaches and my pain scale is relative to that. While still cracking jokes, I said it was about an "8". They gave me a 10 mg vicodin. It didn't do a thing. I was in casts for about 6 months and air casts for another 5. I'm just glad that I can still walk.

It's all relative, that's for sure, and I wonder how many terrible things are happening within our bodies because we don't even recognise the obvious symptom - pain - and take it along to a doctor.
I'm sure that She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed only recently came to terms with some of the horrors we endure after one of my back teeth went crook, my gum got infected and the whole side of my face swelled up like the side of a football.
Seems she'd copped the same thing many years ago and it was the greatest pain she ever suffered, sheer and total agony. When I mentioned that to me it was simply a mild discomfort by comparison she took a breath to abuse me roundly, realised the comparison I'd made, then simply sat down and sobbed quietly.
It was a sobering moment for us both.

Yep I have a higher pain threshold, except when it comes to my teeth. A good old toothache gets me everytime! I just got over an abcess, but then again years ago I was a bigger baby when I had a toothache.

I do have a higher threshold of pain now, but I think that I get used to pain in one area specifically and develop a pain threshold to that one area more than anywhere else in my body if it gets pain the most. I even think it would be harder to handle a hit on my right side than my normal left side... I have had little bits of action on the right side but nothing near a full blown hit.
So I think my pain tolerance has increased, but I can tolerate pain best if it is where CH happens because I am used to pain being there. I am wimpier with pain in a different spot. But like usually if I get an IV when I have been getting hits a bunch, I barely feel it!

An ER doctor was once amazed I wasn't writhing in pain and screaming when I went in with a severe UTI infection. He asked me for a sample of urine and I laughed. I said "you're gonna get blood doctor with a few drops of urine and it's going to take a long time". He said that bad and you're not in worse pain. I told him "well, I suffer from cluster headaches, once you've been through that, this is a piece of cake".

John, please take special care of that ankle. Knowing what we know about our pain threshold means that we may not get the warning signs others get-my broken foot didn't hurt nearly as bad as a ch so when they asked me to rate it,,,well I said about a 4.
Even as a young child my pain tolerance was high-my appendix ruptured before I complained...they had to treat me for perotinitis and still have a big ole scar from that one. Earaches-I'd just pull on my ear...broken nose-never did see a doc about that one.

Couple of years ago, I was pulling a fifty-pound box off a shelf overhead, and dropped it squarely on the bridge of my nose. Broke my nose and blacked both eyes, not to mention a horrible-looking, freely-bleeding scrape. Got my attention (and everyone else's) --and I think I said something like "Uh." That was about it.
High pain threshold, yeah, but I believe we're a clumsy bunch sometimes. 
Still have a scar. Makes me look rather rakish, I think.
Take care of that ankle, John. If you're like the rest of us, you might just walk on it too early, snap your foot off, look down at it and say, "Aww, I've had worse."

I Just had a Kidney stone two weeks ago (thank you doppymax). Everyone at the hospital was so sorry for my pain. When I told them I did not need their Percocet or anything else for my "pain" they could not believe that to me it was just a Kip 5 and no big deal. I gave them all the things I had with me about CH and had a long talk with the ER staff. I think that the comparison (sp) between the stone and CH woke them up to just how bad our little HA's can be.

Having lived through the kidney stone thing many years ago (prior to cluster headaches) I thought as far as pain went nothng could compare. I now know how wrong I was.
I will say being on the "dopeymax" has me fearful that another may be lurking round the bend.

Hi there, It's quite funny because me and a friend were having this exact same conversation last week.
About 10 months ago i went to turkey on holiday and on the second day decided to jump in the sea. Turns out that i dislocated my shoulder doing so.
i calmly got out of the water, went over to my wife and said "have you ever seen a dislocated shoulder before, Coz you have now". We went to the hospital who could do nothing for me and on the way home my shoulder relocated itself. I hardly felt a thing.
Two days later i jumped from the top of a boat just to see if it would move again. Sink or Swim I called it! lol
4 Months ago i got into a fight with 6 blokes in a night club. I ended up getting quite a pasting and 3 cracked ribs for my troubles. I got up, laughed mainly at the fact that i was unscathed and walked home. I didn't feel any pain until 2 days later and that was only mild.
My Friend now calls me indestructible, which is quite flattering. However if he saw me with a CH he would probably call me some thing completely different. As you all know a CH can easily bring the biggest of men to his knees, regardless of his pain threshold.

Pain has so many flavors... I thought I had tried them all until last summer when my back 'went out'. Where it went, I have no idea. I have had my share of pain, like all of us. 25 years of CH, most of that time chronic. Ripped my knee cap off, crushed my knee and femur (pulverized, acutally), cut off the top third of my right thumb on a table saw (got that back)... BUT nothing has made me scream like a baby like when my back went out. I never had back problems like this until I was dropped off the operating table at Stanford the year before last. Those jerks are lucky I am not the type that will sue!
So, all I'm saying is we may have a high threshhold for pain, but there's always *something* that can kick our asses.

When I was 12 I stepped on a pointy dog bone and "sprained" my ankle. When I was 16 I hit a telephone poll (right next to Harry Chapin's grave) and the entire fire department rescued me from the car (a volk's wagon) there was one door left. When I was 18 i hit an orthopeodic surgeon's tree (again a volks wagon)...once i tripped and fell off my neighbors stoop and broke my collar bone (OMG) I also had my gall bladder out and i am here to testify about the horror that comes b4 ya find out yer gall bladder is a gonner. It hurts

I was discussing this very thing with my daughter, pain thresholds; I seem to have always had a very high threshold.
I’ve had regularly dislocating knee caps, but these got fixed with surgery. Had my eldest daughter a few years later, fully natural birth, some gas and air.
At 6 months pregnant I was in a car crash, broken sternum (chest bone), broken ribs and dislocated discs/vertebrae. I would not let the Dr’s do X-rays cause of baby so until she was born we didn’t know about the extent of the injuries. I will always have back pain due to the damage.
Had an emergency appendectomy in my thirties and in every situation Dr’s asked why I was so calm!! I just didn’t think that the pain was as bad as they did.
Maybe that is why I was diagnosed with cluster headaches so quickly my GP knows how much pain I can cope with and when I kept going back every few days in tears…. well enough said
John take care with that ankle, spend lots of time at the ‘puter resting it!!
