Sometimes complaining is worth it!

Finns do not usually complain, even if they would have a very good reason to do so. But as Timo and I learned, sometimes it really pays off to complain. Timo bought milk from our local supermarket. Once he got home and opened it, he noticed that the milk had gone bad. He was naturally disappointed in the milk and went back to the supermarket. Timo was told at the supermarket that they cannot give him a refund; he needs to complain to the manufacturer directly. So, once Timo got home, he did that; he sent the company an email. Few days later Timo got a letter from the company and a gift certificate. The milk cost him 2 euros, the gift certificate was worth 6 euros. Here's what we got with the gift certificate: A carton of milk A carton of blueberry soup 4 milk chocolate puddings Cooking cream Sour cream Sanna

Blueberry soup?? What the heck is that? Sorry you got the run around from the supermarket but by Timo complaining directly it was worth it. I hope he did not drink any of it before he realized it was bad.

Barry, Blueberry soup is simply a dessert/snack soup made of blueberries. When my mother made it at home, the ingredients included just blueberries, water and some sugar. Timo loves blueberries, so naturally he got a carton that, because the manufacturer happened to make that. And no, Timo didn't drink any of the bad milk. He could tell the the milk had gone bad by its smell when he opened the carton, but he did pour some of the milk to his glass to be sure, but it was easy to see that the milk was undrinkable. Sanna

Thanks Sanna, the blueberry soup sounds very good. I have to go to work now and I have a craving for a Timmy's blueberry muffin.

| Rosy, we didn't get any cheese, because we already had lots of it at home. Valio, the company in question, does have several cheese brands among its products, though. Believe me guys, but blueberry soup is actually delicious. It's among the best comfort foods to a sick child - I sure recall getting it many times during my childhood... Sanna

The supermarket shold keep track of expiration dates on dairy foods in their cases. Couldn't Timo have checked the date on the milk when he bought it?

I thought the same thing as Linda, and if the expiry date had been past, the supermarket should have refunded him and if the milk was off before the expiry date then I would have a big problem with the manufacturer

Nice going Timo. I'm with Brew though. Blueberries just don't work for me. I like lingonberry pie though. It seems to me that they would have at least given you another carton of milk when you complained. Still, you got a better deal. Eat up. Charlie

| That's the whole point: we always check the dates carefully and make sure that we'll pick the product, which has the best date (= the expiration date is not anywhere near). In this case, according to the date, the milk should have been just fine, so Timo was very surprised to find out that it wasn't. Milk was bad before it should have been. Back in here, the supermarkets are not allowed to sell products, which have gone pass their expiration date. And I cannot even recall when I have seen a product on sale, which would have the same day's expiration date. The day before the expiration date, yes, but the dame day, nope. Sanna

| Is it really my Italian side that makes me complain too?! lol Never realized that one. I got a ton of free chips and dips and such for complaining. Also got a ton of free Huggies and wipes when I complained about some hard glue all over the inside of the diaper that I caught just before I put it on my son. And I might add that Blueberry soup sounds delicious!

I called Perdue after sticking my hand in an oven stuffer roaster and realizing they "missed" gutting it BARF!!!!!!! The company admitted that "sometimes happens" and sent me coupons worth $15.00 Complimenting works too Anyone remember the Tide commercial about the crayon in the dryer? That was me. I sent them a letter telling them about one of my kids leaving a brown crayon in their pocket which melted in the dryer. I had a load of nearly new jeans that I THOUGHT were ruined. I figured, what the hell and soaked them, then re-washed them in Tide. Got all the crayon out! The company sent me $20 worth of coupons and my neighbors were so excited to come running over to tell me "Jen! Did you see the commercial?!!!" LOL

I was thinking more about this post and maybe it's not so odd that the milk was spoiled but dated fresh. I have done decades of lunch duty in my schools and this comes up occasionally every year. The kids bring me a carton complaining that it smells or tastes bad. We check it, current expiration date, figure the kids are making it up but smell it anyways. It is sour. Usually it's not one but a few cartons. The milk company takes it back and we give the kids a new one. May have been left out of refrigeration too long in the delivery, sometimes it freezes and thaws a few times. It's good to know that you were compensated well. Jen, I loved your crayon story! The chicken one wasn't so pleasant, how gross!!! Charlotte

Hi Sanna, OH YES! I work in the food industry. Part of my past job was to answer customer complaints. We appreciate the compliments and do respond, we REALLY appreciate and react to the complaints. ( ya can't fix what you don't know is broken). Our customers are everything to us. We WANT to hear from you (good or bad). Food companies employ people like me to do just that (and to figure out what went wrong, OR right). As a consumer (with admittedly inside information) I know what is possible and what should be. I NEVER hesitate to contact a company with a compliment if deserved, and a complaint if warranted. To date, I have received a reply and a gift or compensation EVERY time (with one puzzling exception, it was MacDonalds, and I haven't been back there in years). Keep those cards and letters coming, we're listening. Regards Jon

I have been ordering Jeep parts from Quadratec for years. They always have exactly what I need and I receive the parts within 1 - 2 days. A few weeks ago, I ordered some new hood latches and a vent cover. The salesman was such a nice guy so at the end of our conversation, I asked to speak with his manager so I could let him know of the great customer service I had received. I always try to take time to compliment good customer service since it seems to be a fading thing these days. It's great to be able to deal with a company year after year and to receice such great service. If anyone needs Jeep parts, call Quadratec!!!
