I am in the market for a "new" used car. I drive 45 miles to work (one way) every day and the Dakota is killing me. 20$ a day in gas. I just dumped $650.00 into it, but it's been paid for, but it also has 166,000 miles on it.
Looking to spend less than $10,00, so lets hear what you would recomend, not recomend, suggest, praise, burn, and if you have one for sale, I might even buy it.

It is up to YOU to educate yourself and then help your doctor plan your treatment. If you just sit down in front of your doctor and say "make me better" you are setting yourself up for a great deal of pain.

What are you looking for?  A replacement like the Dakota or an efficient car?

A two-year-old Toyota Corolla. Good mileage (30-34 mpg on the highway), and that 1.6L Corolla 4-banger is f'n bulletproof.

Definately a Toy(ota)!  Jesse has my old one, a 2000 Corolla, that he uses for work.  He drives 30 miles to work one way every day too.  Always reliable. Smiley

A Subaru Legacy, somewhere around 10 years old and a 100K miles, with the 2.2 liter engine (not the 2.5), and--preferably--a five-speed, rather than the automatic.

Around 30 mpg on the highway, and they run like the Energizer Bunny.  In your price range, too.

Best,

My wife's got a Legacy, nice car but thirsty if you drive it like it's stolen. Needless to say, I get to drive it very little.  Undecided

Good commuter car though, nice and reliable and comfortable. And AWD, handles superbly.  Wink

I would recommend a 97 Toyota Tercel, if you can find one.  Even when everything wears out, they keep running, and are about 35 mpg.

I'm still kicking myself for giving mine to my daughter in 2003, and getting my Windstar 19 mpg.  Actually, I love the Windstar, but I sure miss my Tercel.

Honda Civic. Very good on gas (38MPG highway) and easy to find for under $10G's. This one is a 2001.

Exact ditto to John's comments above. Honda's and Toyota just dont wear out! My first car was a Toyota Celica, oh so much fun and was a great car. I've had 2 Camry's and 2 Civics in my family. The Civics are a little better gas mileage.

Timing belt every 65k - 900-1100.00.  Also if the car does not have a steady diet of highway miles, you will also have to clean out the intake manifold and egr ports every 30k or so.  The high cost of maintenance on this particular vehicle negates any fuel savings you might have.

The only non Japanese car I owned was a Golf and it was ok, great in snow, good gas mileage, but just not the best car. I had several things recalled on it and the body was bad. I sold it with over 160,000 miles the day after I put an add in the paper. My daughter in law has a Jetta and loves it but it still seems to have alot more issues than my cars do.
