Board of Directors Election Announcement
 
Applications are now open for the OUCH Board of Directors
 
OUCH is recruiting applicants for Board of Director (BoD) members to serve a one or two year term to begin effective the July 2008 Convention in Dallas.
 
OVERVIEW:
OUCH is a national nonprofit organization and is a legal entity accountable by law for its actions, finance and operations within the scope of its Charter. The OUCH Board of Directors is the highest authority and the controlling level of the operations of OUCH. It provides the direction, goals and oversight of all activities, functions and legal affairs of OUCH.
 
In order to gain recognition and funding for our causes, it is important that the OUCH Board of Directors be viewed as competitive with other national health organizations. In order to accomplish this and fulfill the obligations outlined in the OVERVIEW, we will be recruiting professionals with supervisory and management backgrounds and with specific experience and skill sets. Newly elected directors will also complete training related to serving on a non-profit Board of Directors, Mission of the Organization, Organizational Structure and Policies and Procedures and will participate in future training as it is developed.
 
Individuals interested in being considered will need to complete the Director Candidate Application Form located in the Volunteer Center of the Members’ Area on the OUCH website.

The Nominating Committee will review all applicants’ information, conduct interviews of qualified candidates and submit those with the necessary experience, skills and time to commit to the membership for election to the Board of Directors.
 
It is highly desirable that those elected should be available to attend the Convention this year and each year they are in office. The Convention is the official Annual Business Meeting of OUCH and the primary source of training for the Board and Committee Chairs.

I was looking on the OUCH website but could not find the info I was looking for....
 
What is the time commitment involved per week or per month?
 
Are there any set, mandatory time commitments?
 
What is involved in the position? What would I be expected to do/solve/accomplish?

Thanks for asking Liz.  I have included the position description here, but will also try to give you some "real" answers.
 
There is really no set amount of time required.  Directors are requested to check the message board daily and to give input as necessary.  One week may see a Director checking for new messages on the website and finding none for several days in a row.  Other weeks, there may be intense discussions of a particular project or situation that go until a course of action is decided or a situation is resolved.
 
Aside from the daily communications on the message board, BoD Meetings are held at least quarterly, but can be much more frequent as necessary.  It really depends on what is going on.  Meetings are held online and can last for two to three hours.
 
In addition to their duties on the Board, Directors are required to chair or participate as a member of at least one committee.
 
What is there to do or accomplish?  It is usually not up to any one person to solve a problem.  It depends on the situation.  Usually, a project or problem is identified and input is sought from all Directors.  Assignments may be made for individuals to gather information or to contact certain people and report back to the Board.  A decision on what course of action to take is then made and a person may be tasked with ensuring this action is completed.  Aside from that, there are committees to build and maintain, directional issues to resolve, relationships with other organizations to build and maintain, etc.  
 
It is desirable that Directors and Committee members always be on the lookout for ways to further the goals of the organization.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
 
POSITION:  Board of Directors & Board Members  
 
ELECTED:  By OUCH membership  
 
TERM OF OFFICE: Two years  
 
AUTHORITY: Assigned powers by the Bylaws, exercised in meetings or as delegated  
 
PURPOSE:  To serve as a team member in providing leadership and direction of the organization and its delivery of service consistent with OUCH goals, objectives, policies and procedures. Board Members are expected to promote and exhibit ethical practices in all activities.    
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF EACH BOARD MEMBER:  
 
1. Develop and maintain a thorough knowledge of OUCH Bylaws, policies, goals and objectives, Code of Conduct and the ability to explain these to the members of OUCH, the public and potential donors.  
2. Participate in all regularly scheduled and called meetings of the board.  Prepare for each meeting by reading pre-meeting documents, preparing reports to be presented and securing dedicated time.  
3. Make a personal financial donation to OUCH.  Additionally support all activities of OUCH, including Annual Convention.  
4. Participates in leadership development opportunities for board, committee and membership, as available.  
5. Represents OUCH’s interests in all Board, committee and leadership decision-making.  
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE BOARD:  
 
1. Develop and implements goals, objectives and priorities to improve OUCH and its chapters’ services offered, governance, management and continued financial viability.  
2. Review at least annually, the Bylaws, policies and procedures of OUCH to ensure continued viability and applicability.  
3. Perform any and all duties imposed on Board collectively or individually by law, by the Articles of Incorporation, Bylaws, Policies or Procedures.  
4. Provide for the selection of and the direction to the Executive committee. All members are expected to serve on one or more committees.  
5. Determine and secure the resources needed to implement OUCH operational requirements, funding of research, services to members and direct investments.  
6. Oversees the performance of chapters, provide for guidance and assistance and help each attain a level of success. Recommend and or assist chapters in making changes, as necessary, to improve operations.  
7. Elect and support the officers of the board of directors.  
8. Ensure the operations of OUCH are consistent with the Bylaws, policies, procedures, federal and states laws.  
9. Ensure fiduciary responsibility, sound financial management, and financial accountability for contributions, income, and all OUCH assets. Account for and report financial information and ensure public accountability consistent with OUCH policies  
 
TIME COMMITMENT:  OUCH business is generally conducted on the Business Board.  Directors are to check in daily for new messages and to give input as necessary.  Board Meetings are held at least quarterly.  The scheduled and called meetings are usually held on online on Sundays starting at 11:00 am Eastern Time and generally last 2-3 hours. Additionally, those that serve on committees will be required to participate in additional meetings.  
 
RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS:  
 
1. Working knowledge of OUCH structure, governance, policies and procedures.  
 
2. Demonstrated interpersonal skills and abilities.  
 
3. Willingness and ability to collaborate with others and work effectively as a team member and leader.  
 
4. Ability to communicate orally and in writing, especially with computer and Internet.  
 
5. Willingness to adapt and conform to change.

Thanks for the answers, Mike.  You've answered all my questions.
 
The time commitment seems to be the issue for me, so I'd like to know how much time each board member, on average, spends on OUCH stuff per week and per month.  I do understand your answer, Mike - that it varies.  However, I'd like to know what people are truly commiting right now.

Liz, a you should expect to spend 2 to 5 hours per week on BoD business.  Some weeks may be less, others may be more, but I think that is a realistic figure.  If you are active in a committee as well, you could spend another couple of hours per week, depending on what the committee is doing.

I joined OUCH because I wanted to help. I wanted to do anything I could to help other's with CH and I've learned that the only way we will move forward is to do so with a strong voice, a willing heart and a united spirit.
 
OUCH doesn't just need directors, we need volunteers. People who will help with one of projects, people who will do a one of job, peopl who will join a committee. People who can, will and want to HELP.  
 
We need team player's. We need people who work well as a group and we need people who work best on their own initiative.
 
Whatever you CAN offer will be of use to OUCH at some time. I would urge everyone who can spare anything from an hour a year to a day a week to fill in a volunteer form and get on a database of skills so that OUCH can have an Army to fight CH with.
 
I have a great pride in OUCH, a great love for OUCH and an immeasurable amount of respect for all our Directors and Volunteers. We can ALL be part of the solution, sufferer's, supporters, young and old. CH has no boundaries and neither does OUCH.
 
I've said before that OUCH U.S is OUCH US That's US, you and me. Together we make a difference, singly we're just a thin small voice shouting in a wilderness.
 
And so to paraphrase JFK and one of the best things he ever said, Ask not what OUCH can do for you but what you can do for OUCH.
 
When standing together you are never alone.

 Cool  I triple dog dare all of y'all!  The application form to volunteer is  painless, and considering the impact OUCH has, the time committment is minimal.  
 
Several old cliches come to mind, most of which I won't share because I really don't use that sort of language  Roll Eyes...but one goes to the heart of the matter and that is;  be part of the solution or part of the problem.  Or something like that  Undecided
 
I know that this community is full of talented, even gifted people.  What say you?

  Boy!  if that ain't the truth Kathy.  It never ceases to amaze me either.  You talk to people here and think you know them and all of a sudden you discover that this person is a CPA, or an administrator of some sort or worked on various non-profits in the past, etc. etc.  
 
Blows my mind sometimes.
 
 Before George came here, I would have never believed that were so darn many types and breeds of birds in this world.  lol
