Eatting durring a cycle

I am a CH sufferer, so I know how much food is the last thing on your mind durring these cycles. I get pain in my jaw and teeth, as if the pain in my temple and eye aren't enough. I also know that we need to eat something to keep our bodies going. (yes I am a mom who has preached this to her kids) I have found that I can eat things that require no chewing and be ok. I keep yogurt on hand at all times. I occasionally can eat a bowl of canned soup, I kinda mush it up in my mouth with my tongue, but I have to cook it first and then stick it in the fridge until it is cold because heat really hurts me durring these headaches. I have lost over 15 pounds since my cluster headaches began in mid-November of 2007. They haven't given me but maybe one or two pain free days since then. I nly weigh 106pounds now, and am 5'7" so I can't afford to loose any more weight. If anyone else had found a way to eat without it feeling like you are pulling your teeth out please post it here, Thanks

I'm sorry to hear it Kitty. I have the reverse problem. Chewing eases the pain for me. I guess it massages the trigimenal nerve. As a result I typically gain 10lbs during a cycle. Have you thought of using protein shakes? Go to your local health food/supplement store and check the stuff out. It doesn't taste that bad and you can get thousands of calories in a each serving. Good luck hun... -Dennis-

Ensure? While I hate to even smell the stuff since I gave gallons of it to my dying father, it is nutritionally complete, and they even have some high fat, high protein types to help keep weight on. Jello and pudding will help - at least with carbs and the teeth problem. I hope you can regain some balance in your life very soon.

Okay. This post is from another sufferer who becomes the incredible shrinking woman during cycles. Toast. And coffee. I always got an attack directly following a big meal. So, joking aside, i would recommend small bland meals throughout the day and in this way you get nourishment, but avoid the lag that comes from eating a large meal and then setting yourself up for the "big guy". One time a longtime member told me he ate dinner with his medicine as a "chaser" LOL. Best luck

I understand the feeling. I liked simple stuff and canned soup was one. I had no problem eating during the day most of the time but I liked "thinner" stuff in the evenings. I always liked Progresso soups for something with a little oomph. Good luck. Charlie

It is up to YOU to educate yourself and then help your doctor plan your treatment. If you just sit down in front of your doctor and say "make me better" you are setting yourself up for a great deal of pain.

Can you not eat inbetween HA's? I have been having 5 to 8 hits a day. I do eat between the pain. I just don't really feel hungry. Maybe it is because of the pain that I have, I don't know. I have to make myself eat. I do know that I used to be able to eat alot more than I can now. I can't even finish a 4 piece nugget Happy Meal. I just wanted to know if there were other who had this feeling too, and if so what they did to "fix it". I have spoken to my Dr. about it, and she suggested I ask other sufferers about it. I live i a very small town and we don't have any Dr's here who are worth there weight. I am planning to see a Nueroligist as soon as possible. I called the closest one (a three and a half hour drive) and they said they would call me with an appointment. I did that on Wednesday. I waited 2 days, and I am planning to call them again on Monday and try again. If being nice and patient doesn't work, then I will let the demanding irrational side of me out and see if that works. Also I don't really know, but could my Epidrin be causeing the loss of appitite? It is generic for Midrin, which is a drug commonly used to treat migrane and tension headaches. It doesn't killl the beast, but it does settle him down enough that pacing and walking in the cold will give me relief ussually. Kitty

Kitty, I'm sorry that the beast prevents you eating normally. Can you eat mashed potatoes? My best supporter likes to make it very, very soft sometimes. In fact, if it had some more milk, it would be potato soup. It tastes delicious! How about porridge? Or perhaps you could try what I did when two of my wisdom teeth were taken out at once and chewing was out of the question: I mashed many of the normal foods I'd eat and made purees, which are quite similar which moms make for their children. Basically you'd be eating all the normal things, but just in more soft form. Hope it helps, Sanna
