Any ideas on what this might be...UPDATED

My daughter started with a headache about 6 p.m. last night. By 8 p.m. she was bent over sobbing in pain that her head hurt and she wanted to gouge her eyes out. I sent her to bed with an Aleve and Tylenol (she's only 14). She was writhing around in her bed sobbing in hysterics screaming her head hurt and her eyes hurt and her neck and back hurt like someone had stuck in a knife in it. Off to the ER we go. They gave her pain meds, ended up having to give her 2mg of dilaudid to ease her pain. After blood work and a CT, they had to do LP (spinal tap) as they were concerned it might be meningitis. All the while my baby girl is crying and saying Mommy am I gonna die, I feel like I'm dying, I don't wanna die. Talk about heart pain. In the end, the tap was clear, no meningitis. They ruled it migraine. Does ANYONE here know of any kind of headache that would cause EXTREME neck and back pain?.. I mean pain that made it so she couldn't move, and she has a high pain tolerance. Any info would be appreciated. She's still sleeping and I"m waiting to see if she will suffer a spinal headache at which point we'll be off to the docs again. Thanks again folks Cat p.s. any and all vibes, prayers, mojo and energy is much welcome.

I was thinking the same thing, viral meningitis. Bacterial will show in the spinal fluid as cloudy, much like cloudy urine for a bladder infection. Viral does not show. (I had meningitis at her age myself) Is she running a fever? Also, sometimes the bacterial form takes longer to show in the spinal fluid even if it's there. I'd 1) get a second opinion, 2) keep on top of this, and do NOT let her around other kids, just in case.

What Redd said. My mom had viral meningitis and the Dr's took forever to correctly diagnose her. Definately get 2nd opinion if she is not feeling better.

My thought is that they probably should have put her on anti-biotics just in case if there was any kind of fever along with the head pain. This is an odd question--but did she pick up any reptiles (certain kinds I'm not sure which kinds--I think boa constrictors)--they can pass meningitis infection (bacterial). If no fever, I would guess they are right with the migraine diagnosis but still if you have any question, maybe call your doc and ask for anti-biotic. Let us know how she is doing. Star

Basilar migraine involves the brain stem, and it can cause problems moving, slurred speech, etc. Not sure how often it spreads to back/neck pain. Basilar migraine seems to be relatively common among adolescent girls. If it is basilar, triptans are a bad idea - could cause big problems.

Thanks everyone. She is actually on Amoxicillin right now for a sinus flare that she had about 9 days ago now. She was sick a week ago Monday - the 17th and I had her in to the pediatrician. They tested for influenza, strep and mono, all negative, so with the inflamed sinuses put her on an antibiotic. She has been running a fever, and she has displayed the following symptoms over the last 2 days (including yesterday before the head/neck/back pain hit): Unusual fatigue with episodes of fainting and passing out, the severe headache, worst ever, change in vision, stiff neck, areas of numbness and tingling and weakness on her right side - at one point her toes were completely numb while in the ER, as well as stumbling. I have an appt with her pediatrician who is, IMO the best in the country. She has saved my kids lives countless times. Unfortunately their computers are down and they can't book an appt for her, so the Dr's nurse is going to call me as soon as they can get her in for an appt. She is still sleeping soundly, I keep checking on her to be sure she's breathing. I know what a spinal headace feels like, so I'm on pins and needles waiting to see if she fares better. There is nothing more heart wrenching than when your child looks at you with utter terror and asks you if they are going to die. While I do not know what the cause of this is yet, all your suggestions are very helpful as I can take them to her ped. and go from there. Please keep them coming. I had no idea viral meningitis showed as clear fluid. She is off school until we can sort out what the problem is. Thanks again, and please keep the suggestions coming. Cat Edited to add: Normally she wouldn't have been given antibiotics for a sinus inflammation but after her severe and protracted bout with pneumonia in the fall, her pediatrician is extra careful and does NOT want to take a chance with her health.

The anti-biotic could also be masking the extent of a bacterial meingitis, which also can help it to mutate and become drug resistant. The sleeping and fatiuge is consistant with meningitis as well. (I slept 4 weeks of my life away when I had it.) The numbness could be basilar migrain, or it could be blocked nerves due to the stress and tension as she tightens up and fights against the pain. No knowing for sure. If it's a matter of another day to get her in to her regular pediatrician, I'd take to the ER and ask for her to be admitted. Sleeping alot can also mean she isn't getting enough fluids (can drink when sleeping) which will make any of her pain worse, and help spread whatever infection might be there much faster?

How have her eating habits been? I am asking because you mentioned the fatigue and passing out. I am probably wrong, but if she is not eating well, and also sick from a sinus infection, that could cause the fatigue and fainting. It may also cause the headache. I think no matter what I would keep trying to find a doctor to help her. If it is one of the conditions the other posts talk about, it needs to be treated. I had to go to many doctors before I found one that would take me seriously with the problems my son faced. I even had one doctor tell me to quit feeding him because he would be nothing more than a vegetable if he lived to be 2 years old. He is now 13. He had aspiration phnuemonia shortly after birth, and it was not caught in time. He now is left with Cerebral Palsy, speech disorder, and delayed learning. He is, however, in the 8th grade (he was never held back). He has a teacher aide who helps him alot. My point that I guess I was trying to make with the story of my son was that it was worth it though to see him today, happy and full of life again. Best wishes for your daughter, and you too.

Just as a precaution I would not rule out that this might also be drug related. Amoxicillin can cause headaches and severe allergic reactions. I have experienced severe headaches, sweating and rash while taking it. Sending vibes, Dan

Cat, I will put out energy. Get her in to the doc and talk about every. Let her expalin each and ever little thing with the doctor. Show the doctor how far down the pain was going in her pack and where it moved around in her head. The headache and back pain is similar to what I get when I trigger the Occipital Neuralagia. But those typically trigger a Cluster after that so there is not a way for me to say where the pain is after that. But I've never passed out from it. The fatigue I feel after a Hit is because my whole body tenses up and I feel like I went 2 rounds in the UFC. Cat, follow your gut. You have great intuition. While you might not be able to fix it, you know how to focus, to make sure that she is safe. Call me if you need to. Blessed Be, my Sister. Tia

Cat try a ear nose and throat specialist. It could be that sinus is not clearing up. Believe me sinus makes your neck, ear, eye hurt. It can be really painful. I had a sinus infection and they treated it. The meds did not work. I finally got it fixed by going to the specialist. I will be praying for her.

Thank you so very much everyone for your input and suggestions. It has helped tremendously. We got home from the docs this morning, and they retested for flu, strep and mono, she came back as slightly elevated on the mono, although the tech put it as a negative, but the Doc feels that isn't accurate and wants to consider her a real candidate for mono once we rule out the kidney issues.....then they did a urinalysis - the doc seemed concerned about her kidneys. One of the reasons I LOVE my pediatrician is because she doesn't candy coat anything and gives the you the abc's of treating WHATEVER the outcome is. There was blood in the urine as well as another chemical that she said can indicate early kidney failure. They are running further tests but they take 24 hours so the doc will call us tomorrow with the results and let us know if she needs to go in the hospital. She is sleeping peacefully right now, they gave her a shot of Rocephin (sp) - a very strong anti-biotic as well as a shot of toradol to ease her pain. She is still suffering back, neck and head pain but not as severe. So the drama carries on at the Lind household. It never ends does it - everyone of us, as soon as we think we get a grip on things, someone adds oil to the rope and watches us slide. Thank heavens for knots and clusterbuddies and second Mom's. I love ya Jacks. Cat

Damn, Cat! Sending you all the strength and good luck I have. Keep us updated. Now, if she does have a bad enough sinus problem, couple that with a migraine and if she's trying to hold her head still, she could be having muscle spasms in her neck and back. I've had muscle spasms bad enough that it would take my breath away. Carolyn

I just spoke to Cat, her daughter has been admitted to one of the local hospitals. They seem to believe that her kidneys are the source of her problems. More tests should be able to tell exactly what's going on. She asked that I post an update and I ask that you keep Cat and her daughter in your thoughts. Bill
