How to relate pain to a Doc?

This afternoon a lady pulled out in front of me, and I couldn't stop in time. Fortunately we just clipped bumpers, and the damage to the cars was minimal. Of course she has no insurance! 
The problem was that in braking hard to try to stop in time my right leg was tensed up, and the impact messed up my back again where it has been torn up twice before. At first I didn't think there was a problem, but after about an hour I could hardly put my foot on the ground. Went to the Dr., and of course here came the question..."Rate your pain on a 1 to 10 basis, with 10 being the worst pain ever". How do you tell him it is only about a ONE??? I told him I'm a clusterhead, and cannot relate to his system. He said, "Well, try to relate it as if you weren't a clusterhead!" Like I can remember what pain felt like almost 30 years ago!
How do the rest of you deal with such a thing? I could use some help here, cause I have to try to convince my insurance company there was really an injury when I can't even relate the pain level. I can just see it now. I'll get a settlement that includes 50 cents for pain and suffering!  Any help in trying to relate this to them would be helpful.

It is up to YOU to educate yourself and then help your doctor plan your treatment. If you just sit down in front of your doctor and say "make me better" you are setting yourself up for a great deal of pain.

When I have to relate pain to my doc, I do it on a non-CH based scale. I know it's hard to do, but try to think of it as how much it hurts, and what you can't do because of it. I put my head pain on a different scale when it comes to that. Or maybe try thinking of your CH as a 19 out of 10, then "scale" down from there (pardon the pun). If you can't put your foot on the ground, due to the amount of pain you're having, it must hurt pretty bad.
When we are being hit with the worst pain there is, it's hard to compare. But give it a shot, for your back's sake. Try putting your body pain on a different scale, and don't try to relate to CH when determining your body pain. I hope your back heals up as quickly as possible.

Anyone who deals with chronic pain forgets that pain in general tells us there is something wrong. It isn't suppposed to hurt.
It kinda warps the sense of urgency. I'd give it at least a 6 depending on how much limping you have to do or how hard it is to tie your shoes.

Geez Jerry, I feel your pain (literally). Except for how (fall vs car accident) that could have been my post. Have been to 4 neuros and 2 docs, and each time I had to s-t-r-e-t-c-h it to come up with a 2. Told each one I was a clusterhead and NONE of 'em had a clue (most don't). So now they are all thinking, well, that's not so bad. When I later tried to "cluster" modify my answer, I got the fish eye and could just read their minds, uh-oh, drug seeker (which is the FARTHEST thing from my mind, I've taken enough for several lifetimes) so it was too late. Bitter lesson learned there, just one more of the little "benes" ch confers.
After 26 years of ch myself, I cannot relate to any other pain, as they ALL pale in comparison. Jonny is just being Jonny  (and no problem there) and he may sound flip, but he's right. I just prefer to call it "selective modification" rather than lying. So now, (the first time asked) I double it and add 1 (a 2 becomes a 5). Where did I get that? Who the hell knows. Basically, I'm agreeing with purpleydog.
BTW, am currently being treated by an accupuncturist for the back pain. It has been wonderfully effective (and I couldn't care less if its "all in my head" or not). And yes, I know, it doesn't work for ch (even tho I let him try, no sense aggravating him with doubts).

Just tell your doc there is no pain at all, yet you cant walk, cant put the foot down but cant feel a thing ... that would get him into panicking mode pretty quickly ! the doc will think you have seriously damaged some nerves

I think you would just have to guess how much it would hurt to a normal person, maybe a 7-8 out of 10.
High pain tolerance can be dangerous in some cases though. My husband had appendicitis and by the time he complained that his tummy hurt the appendix had already burst and gone gangrenous ! It almost killed him !! The surgeon who did the operation couldnt believe it. After the surgery, he was asked why he didnt come to the hospital earlier, he just shrugged and said " Ealier it didnt hurt " !!!

Easy there........Don't try to remember pain from 30 years ago, just isolate where the pain is and compare from there.
Just reated the pain to how much pain you've ever felt "in your foot" with 1 being no pain and ten is the worst pain "in your foot" you've ever felt.
Then tell your doc he is a 8 as far as "pain in your ass" you've ever felt. I find the "relative pain" test dumb too. I've had many surgeries and reconstructions and had situations where I would walk on parts that were not supposed to be tolerable, yet I did. Worthless tests IMO.

Oh please, god (small "g" ) NO.
If it sounds anything like EJ "singing" I couldn't bear it. I swear--her entire FAMILY cannot sing... When she and her sisters tune up, the coyotes answer from the foothills. All the dogs in the neighborhood commence to howl in a mournful fashion, and the wineglasses in the cabinet jitter about.
As you might guess, I'm a very sensitive fellow.
