The infamous RED X. If you turn it on it's side it may help keep vampires away - not sure if it will work on Pit Bull's.

X for me too...I honestly don't like pit bulls, but I don't want them abused either. I think there's something in their DNA or whatever that makes them turn on you. A pitbull pup, once it turned around 2, just one day turned on my 15 year old niece. She raised him since a pup. Her only way out was to block her door and jump out the window, thank God she lived in the basement. One time I was walking with my friend and her Weimereiner (sp?) and one full grown pit bull jumped the gate and just attacked her dog for no reason. We both started screaming. It nearly tore the arm off her dog. People came running with sticks to get it away. My friend sued the owners, after a $1500 vet bill. In other words, there's something wrong with them - I think- anyway. That's why I think they use them for fighting. Langa

Langa, they are actually not recognized by either the CKC or the AKC as a breed of dog because they were genetically engineered for pit fighting. There is good reason they are to be watched, they literally were bred and cross bred and engineered for the sole purpose of tearing each other apart. I've seen some good ones, but I'd never trust one in a home with other pets or with children. Cat

I was told that the Doberman and Pit Bull's were inbread to develop their protection/attack attributes. One of the side effects is their skeletal/bone structures quit growing and their muscles/organs continue to grow. The result for some animals is their skull stops growing and their brain continues to grow and the dog literally goes insane from the pressure, usually around 2-4 yrs old. Sounded reasonable at the time.

While genetics absolutely play a factor in a pit bull tempermant and some a more prone to aggressive behavior, but they are also very much a result of their owner. It's not the breed for everybody; they require ample exercise, proper training and a lot of attention. When raised properly they can make wonderful pets Again, as I said before, some can be aggressive. Just like people they should be judged on an individual basis. Lola, my pit bull, was dumped out of a car by her owners. When I found her I had the choice of keeping her or giving her back to the shelter, where she most likely would have been euthanize. She is really an amazing dog; nothing but a joy and it is unfair to stereotype a dog based on it's breed. With that being said, I do understand your concerned.

My ex girlfriend had a Pit Bull "Ginger". Ginger was a very meek dog and was as loving as a dog could be. Ex girlfriend was NOT meek LOL. Anyway they are both lovely creatures where ever they are. Agreed the Owner plays a huge role in the dogs disposition and how it will interact. However I still cannot discount the information mentioned above for SOME of the individuals of those breds. The title of this thread is accurate IMHO. Re: Beware of Pit Bull...

Pit Bulls can be very gentle dogs. Watch the Dog Whisperer next Friday night and look for " Daddy" the pitbull. I don't know if the AKA is aware that the Pittbull has bred with the Rabbit though

Pit Bulls were originally bred for slaughter houses to hold the cow's nose while it was slaughtered in the pit (where the slaughter took place). I've owned several and they were the sweetest dogs in the world, but they were "raised" to be sweet and spoiled. I hold with the theory (and my vet upholds it also) that a dog is NOT predisposed to be bad, but will adhere to it's upbringing. Right now I have a Pitt/Boxer mix - all 80 pounds of him and he's the most gentle dog anyone would ever want to meet. He's grown up with my grandson and they've wrestled since day one and all the dog has ever done is growl like crazy and slobber all over Caleb. He's done the same with my cats (and still does). They'll be solid wet from slobber, but he NEVER has bitten one yet. I've seen a lot of dog owners over the years who needed to be shot, drawn and quartered, but I just get on my soap box when I see dogs getting run down. Dogs, like children are NOT born bad... people make them that way. Hugs BD

I must admit that I've always been bit afraid of pit bulls, but not as much as I'm afraid of dobermans and rottweilers. I'm not afraid of dogs in general, just these few ones (but I do tend to keep my distance from the dogs I don't know that well, especially if they are behaving bit hostile and the owner is not next to me...). I don't have any bad experiences with any of those breeds, because none of my dog-owner relatives/family friends own them. I think that my fear has something to do with the fact that I've read quite often stories about one of those dogs attacking and even killing innocent people around them. Just this morning I read one of those stories: a 10-year-old boy was attacked by the family's two rottweilers. He died right there on his own back yard. The local vet put the dogs to sleep, neither had been aggressive before. Sanna

| 1. Sensationalist Media. People don't want to read: "Pit Bull Spends Days Lounging in the Sun, Playing With Brother And Cuddling" 2. These stories never give the whole picture. They never say if the owner properly exercised the dogs; bored can lead to aggression. They don't say if the dogs were properly socialized to different people and noises. Or if the owner hit or abused the dogs causing fear aggression. In cases like this is would be very interesting to study these and other factors that can lead to aggressive behavior. I would be my left arm that in most cases the owners would be at fault

My experience to date is the most belligerant dogs I've ever known have been Jack Russell terriers owned by little old ladies. I've known a couple of lovely pit bulls, actually the only two pit bulls I've ever met were both lovely little dogs. I personally think ANY dog can or will turn if provoked. I wouldn't leave young kids alone in a room with ANY dog. Who knows what will set a dog off to biting if a kid bugs it or hurts it in some way. It all boils down to being responsible. I won't let my kids pet your dog until you have said it is okay and in turn - keep your kids away from my dog if it's on a lead and ASK before you pet. I'll keep my dog secured in my garden, YOU take note of "Beware of the dog" signs. I read once that there are more accidents or incidents, however you want to word it, involving labradors than any other breed. Now I think this is becaue there are more of them as "family dogs" therefore more scope for them to be treated in such a way that they'll react but the point is, any dog is a danger if not treated properly.

I grew up next door to a pug that would tear your face off for looking at it the wrong way, and the rest of my days were spent with my best friend and her family who bred great danes as show dogs. Beautiful animals, but temperment can be a problem in any breed - and with pure breds it has to be documented. Any animal has the ability to do harm. The raising of the animal will indicate most of it's character. You cannot domesticate an animal and expect that you will never again have a problem with them. I currently have a cat that is almost 20lbs. If it were smart enough to understand it was a cat, it would be an animal to be wary of ... fortunately it's dumber than a box of rox so it doesn't know it can do any damage I did not intend to pass judgement on the breed personally, only to list the details I know. I've met many that were great dogs, and every account (except one) that I know of that involved the pit bull attacks had the dog living under poor conditions. I just personally would never own one with children or other pets in the house. Cat

Back in the old days Pit Bulls used to be "nanny" dogs which would help look after the young children in a household because they were so good with them. I believe it's all in how they're brought up myself. Sad as to what people have done to a breed of dog to get off on their lust of blood and money.

One morning I got up and had a pit bull in my living room - he didn't belong there, but there he was. Apparently he'd jumped our fence and come thru the doggie door and just made himself at home. I told him he didn't belong there and put him out the front door and he just came right back around and jumped the fence and came right back in. After a few attempts to get "rid" of him, we just figured we might as well feed him. Named him Bully. Bully took it upon himself to be my protector. He went to work with me, laid by my desk and checked out all who came into my office. If he had a problem with anyone he'd let me know (usually he was right in his assumptions and I learned to trust his judgment -especially in hiring). He never got out of line, never tried to bite anyone - just "was there". He was "old" when he appeared and stayed with us till he died. We never knew how he was raised when he was young. Our vet said he was a pruebread as far as he could tell, but he just found us and liked what he saw I guess. So I'm still taking the dog's side of this argument. I've probably taken in more stays with "questionable" origins than most people and I've yet to get a vicious dog. I've had some that wanted to be, but after about a week learned that we don't do things that way at this house and turned out to be docile and loveable. Hugs BD
