Well here it's like calling someone a muppet or an idiot. It's not an abusive word generally, just another one like when I say oh you plonker or you wassock or whatever!

It it really depends,  my Mum thinks it is a really bad word to say, I used to think it wasn't really any worse than saying Bloody Hell, but I have been convinced by more than one person that it is a little bit worse. I do not use it any more, it is safer that way.

Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.

 Gregory Macguire

It's a marvelous tale about Oz through the eyes of Elphaba, "the wicked witch of the west".  She was a roomie in college with Glenda "the good witch".  It is a nice new twist on an already great story.

He also wrote Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister.  About Cinderella's Stepsisters.  Also recommended.

No, once it's all compiled and thick and heavy enough, I think she plans to wallop me with it for something that happened back in '80 or '81, or all that decade.  The backhanded whack for the 90's, and make me read it, then probably eat it.

Now that is too damn cute.

I recently got

for my kids. And got the Book written by Frank Baum (Author of Oz).  He wrote it when his daugther asked him how Santa could still be alive.  And it explains how the Leaders of all the mystical creatures decided to give him the Mantle of Immortality.  Very cool story.

Only knew about the movie because a friend had a copy for her son when I was in college and could never find it.  Generally they will notplay it on the TV because it is a pretty pagan perspective on the Story of Santa. But he was very detailed about how everything from Stockings to how Mom's and Dad's help santa each year.

"Shyness--How Normal Behavior Became a Sickness" by Christopher Lane.

Describes how the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders was greatly expanded and revised, with the help of the pharmaceutical industry--who, as we know, has a nostrum for every illness, even if the illness has to be invented.

Interesting.
