PEANUT SAVED US (PIC INC.)

I had a very late night last night (Went to sleep around 4 am) and forgot to blow out a candle I have on top of the bureau. I woke up annoyed at Peanut because she kept barking. Low, incessant barks and low growls. I tried to ignore her. Then she went up on my pillow and practically laid on my head as she scratched the pillow, the way she does outside when she's digging a hole in the ground. So I figured she really needed a walk. When I opened my eyes, still have asleep and annoyed, she jumped off the bed and ran towards the bureau and started barking loud this time and doing her high jumps when she's excited. Then I saw what she was barking at. The candle I forgot to blow out before I went to bed had no wax in it, but flames were shooting out of it and they were already burning the rim of one of the tanks I have one of my hamsters in. The bottom was starting to burn into the wood of the bureau. I didn't even think, I just acted. I quickly grabbed a towel, grabbed the glass jar with flames that were already about 8 inches high, and ran into the bathroom in our room and threw it in the sink where I had a blouse soaking in water. Once the glass hit the water it shattered and then all the smoke from the flames going out triggered the fire alarm. That's when Gordon woke up. I'll say it again, Dogs are amazing animals and you hear about dogs saving families from fires or alerting them to other dangers, but it doesn't really hit you till it hits your home. After I was calm, I kissed and hugged Peanut to death and gave her a wonderful treat. She was way proud of herself too. By the way, should the fire gotten really bad, our only way out would have been blocked as the door is past the bureau - our only option would have been the window. Wide awake and dumb Langa for forgetting the candle.

Thank God for Peanut. Thank goodness you are all alright!! That would have scared the shit out of me! We have 2 cats, and I won't keep candles (except for emergencies) in the house, it's too easy for one of them to jump up, especially monster sized Ringo, and walk by one, and bump into it. And not even realize it. Animals ARE amazing, my dogs showed me things, and even found their lost boot that came off when the weather was really cold, and we were walking at the park. Wanted me to go down this one road, I didn't want to go, but Murph insisted. I'll be damned, there was his missing boot. Glad you're ok sis. Be careful, and give Peanut lot's of hugs from me.

I love candles too but I'm a real worry guts about them. I always take them into the kitchen and stand them in the sink if I've been burning them and am about to go to bed. I've seen and heard of some horrific fires from them and I've learnt from others mistakes. I'm so glad you're all safe, what a good little dog Peanut is!

Dachshunds rule!! I swear my little doxie is so observant (or obsessive/compulsive that she gets ticked off if she sees a blade of grass in the yard that she thinks is out of place. Give Peanut an extra blanket to burrow under tonight...."it's a Dachshund Thing".

My youngest daughter calls it her 3rd near death experience. Fell asleep with a candle burning on a plate, sitting on the carpeted floor, next to her floor level futon. Woke a couple hours later with the carpet, bedding and futon frame on fire. By the time her yells woke me and I got down the hall to her room, flames were about 4 feet high. I managed to grab a comforter that wasn't on fire an smother the flames with just a little singed hair. Carpet an futon were a loss. Daughter was ok. Candles suck!
