(from the article) Michael Sheridan was stripped of his title as class vice president, barred from attending an honors student dinner and suspended for a day after buying a bag of Skittles from a classmate. School spokeswoman Catherine Sullivan-DeCarlo said the New Haven school system banned candy sales in 2003 as part of a districtwide school wellness policy. Sigh - just another example of schools taking over where parents should be. If I allow my child to eat candy, the School District should have nothing to say about it. And there should be no punishment - especially suspension? Why is buying/eating candy being put on the same plane as taking a swing at a teacher?? It's the End Days!!!!!

Yeah, and yesterday I had a 5th grade student give me the middle finger, refuse to coperate, verablly threaten a student and some other things. When sent to the office (which he refused to do) he was "talked " to and sent back an hour later!! He had just come off of a 5 day suspension from another teacher and administration didn't know what too do so they chose to do NOTHING!The inconsistancy in the schools is so frustrating!! Charlotte

Makes me wonder what kind of punishment my former classmates would have got when they left the school area to buy candy during their lunch break? Or what would have happened to my class when we sold candy at school cafeteria one weekend as one of the items at our fund raising for a field trip? I'm all for healthy eating and all that, but that's ridiculous. Sanna

Skittles are extremely dangerous, you can easily put an eye out with one of those.

Another example of no common sense. It seems that there is more and more of this everywhere ( lack of it). Lee

Update! Seems like there was no *rule* like that at all in the school policy. I watched an interview with the mother and she stated that the ONLY policy she could find dealt with *not* selling candy to raise money for the school. There was NO policy that prohibited the kids from a)eating candy on school property or b)selling candy on school property. I like sour skittles, but eat too many and they will blister your tongue.

Its happening everywhere now, they sent a long list home with my daughter of foods that you cannt send your child in with. these included sweets,chocolate.chrisps.sausage rolls, pies, pasties, rice crackers, the list was nearly endless. But they will give the kids pizza, chips and peanut butter for their dinner. But if you send them with any of the banned items they are taken off them.
