What is wrong with people!???
I keep seeing people mistreating their animals. I had to call the ASPCA on my sister - they took her 2 dogs and cat. One of her dogs couldn't even walk cause her nails had grown so long they were digging in the little pads on the bottom. She had never been untied from the radiator.
Crystal's dad was actually telling me he feels sad about Vick going to jail over the pitbull fighting allegations. I told him "they weren't allegations stupid, it really happened. How would you like to be held underwater until you drown. It took 2 of them to do it every time to hold it down, that's how hard the dog fought and this is after it had been chewed apart by another crazy animal...and those pit bulls have be mistreated and abused in order to become so savage." Then he started saying that that's a "black thing" - a black thing???? - I can't write what I told him here.
My younger sister, who passed away, once made a pact with the kids from her neighborhood - the pact was that for every lost kitten/cat they found she would pay them each $5. Then she would bring them to an animal shelter. Either that or these kids would pass their time by putting them in a metal garbage can and burning them alive...and these were kids!
And now my neighbor told me this morning me how she flushed her daughter's hamster down the toilet because she was tired of cleaning the crate (her daughter is away at college). Let's just say my husband had to come out and drag me in because I wanted a piece of her.
God bless animal lovers and those organizations who help mistreated animals. My ex-sister in law used to work for a shelter for greyhound dogs - you don't even want to know what they did with them after they weren't good enough for races.
How do they sleep at night?
Sorry for the vent. Stuff like this brings out the absolute worst in me

I could not agree with you more. The way people treat animals is beyond appaulling. I had to do a project on puppy mills, researching the topic I saw pictures that actually made me sick. I can't even talk about the Vick situation because it makes my blood boil. Even worse is that people treat their own pets that way. Of my 3 dogs, one was removed with his mother and brother when he was 3 weeks old because the owner beat them and was neglectful. One of the others, was left in a bare cage at all times except to be walked, she got so bored she stared chewing her tail, now the end of her tail has no hair and is scared. They eventually decided that it wasn't fair to keep her like that, and the solution they came up with was to dump her out of a car?!?!?!

It is up to YOU to educate yourself and then help your doctor plan your treatment. If you just sit down in front of your doctor and say "make me better" you are setting yourself up for a great deal of pain.

I had a friend who adopted two greyhounds after their racing days were through. He and his wife pulled all the furniture in the living room about 18" away from the walls so there was, in effect, a doggie track in their house. We'd sit there and visit while the dogs would trot lap after lap around us. It was the darndest thing. They're just born to run, I guess. Sweet pups.

My wife has a friend that adopted 2 or 3 Scottish Terriers from Texas. All have to wear diapers because they were sexually abused beyond repair.
I have no clue what happened to the guy legally, but I do believe beastiality is a crime.

We had a couple of dogs at different periods when I was a kid. The first dog, my dad beat it so bad, he broke it's leg. He eventually took it out and shot it, because he couldn't train it. A few years later, we got a mini-dachsund puppy. Of course, my dad has NO clue about animals, and my mom had me on a chair in the kitchen hemming a dress I had on. My dad was trying to get the dog to go into the basement, no training, and beat the fuck out of that poor dog, with a broom handle.
That dog was crying, screaming and yelping, and my mom was trying to tell me to leave the kitchen. All I could hear was the dog, until she finally yelled in my ear.
My dad took that dog out and shot it too.
He and his current wife had a dog, and I heard of the beatings he gave it. I swear, if I'd have been there, he'd know what the dog felt like. The wife said it was the last dog, they'd never get another one. last Christmas, guess what they had?
People who mistreat animals have something wrong with them. Why do people get dogs, if they won't take care of them? And you know, on those winter coats you see a bit of fur trim? Says it's fox? Guess what folks, it's dog fur. Now a lot is advertised as animal fur. What kind?
I saw a news piece a few years back, was extremely upsetting to me. In an asian country, a guy grabbed a dog, german shepard type, and took a knife and skinned it alive. Left it laying on the street, still alive, in shock, no fur. All to sell the fur to put on clothes, or to make fur throws. They did the same with cats.
I can't even watch this stuff anymore, I can't hear about it, I feel helpless. it pisses me off to no end the way people treat animals, and for the ones in the USA, it makes me want to show them what the animal feels like. Bad thing is, they were probably treated that way as kids. Stupid fucking people.

My God PD, how awful. How did your father sleep at night? You must have some post trauma from that. I don't know anyone who wouldn't. I'm so sorry. I actually cried reading your story, especially since I have a mini doxie.
Frankly, I think people like this get animals because they love to hurt and animals don't always fight back.
One of the reasons I won't go to the circus is because of the inhumane ways they have to train the animals...especially the elephants.
And those poor dogs that were sexually abused. These are the times when I would love for those who do the abusing go through weeks of the same abuse at the hands of others.
I'm with Gramma too, I hope there's a place in hell waiting for these bastards.

He is a few inches shorter than me, and I'll tell ya, if I ever see him abusing another animal, I'd kick his ass clear into next week, and take the dog. He has no idea how to train a dog, thinks they should just read his mind.
I had two dogs, a golden retriever and a weimaraner. They were six months apart in age, and we took them to dog training school. They were the best dogs, and we never, ever hit them. No need. I trained them well, and I got plenty of comments about what good dogs they were. The training was ongoing throughout their lives, and reinforcing what they learned. Just like with kids. They knew quite a lot of commands, and I taught them hand signals too. And I would whisper to them what I wanted them to do, and they'd do it. Murphy (purpleydog) and Maggi (watdog), they knew their names, and nicknames, LOL. They were happy dogs. 
They died in 2006, six months apart, they were both 11 1/2. They were the best dogs, and so very friendly. I still miss them very much, and I'd get another dog, but I'm not home enough to raise one properly. Plus, I can't have one in the apt. I'm renting.
I've always had an affinity for animals, especially dogs, and when I was a kid, I could always pet a dog, even if it was known as a mean dog that would bite.
My dad prides himself on being an intelligent person  But he has no idea on how to teach anything. Just like when he'd come home, and beat the crap out of me, for no reason, I had not idea what was going on. WTF? Think of a dog... they have no idea what you want, unless you show them, patiently, and with praise.
You are right, Brew. It's all about control. Among other things, my dad is a control freak. I can only hope that when (not if) his neighbors hear him hitting that dog, they call the police. Not that they'd do anything, but it may make him think. I doubt it though. I hate people that hurt animals.

My Homer was rescued from a garbage bag in a dumpster in FL (along with his mother and 7 siblings). He's now 80 pounds of "lap" doggie, but he's got a home and is spoiled rotten. I've had him since he was 8 weeks old.
Brandy came from a neighbor who couldn't (wouldn't) take care of her. She's an Aussie Shepherd and as loveable as can be.
Fred was dumped in another neighbor's yard. She's elderly and when her husband broke his leg couldn't take care of him. He's my baby. Right now he's sleeping soundly on my pillow (he's not allowed on the bed, but "forgets" - he's young).
Moe and Joe are two black cats that are here at the farm to "work". I keep telling them NOT to get attached to me, but they keep insisting on "loving" on me.
My late husband used to get peeved at me (or pretended to - he really had a soft spot for animals -just didn't like to show it) when I'd make him stop and pick up a stray on the side of the road cause it looked hungry.
But NO ONE mistreats an animal within my seeing it - the wrath of hell is mild compared to what they get from me.

PD, i'm sure your dogs were so blessed to have you. Peanut is very smart and trained by me and I never hit her and I still have to keep wee-wee pads in certain spots of the house because if the weather is bad outside she refuses to go out. She's only 11 pounds but she's all attitude and a great guard dog...she has no idea she's that tiny. I bought her at a mall pet store. My next dog(s) will be from rescue places.
I saw my neighbor this morning - the one that flushed the hamster down the toilet. I was walking Peanut and getting the mail. She wanted to apologize for seeming so "mean" yesterday. I asked her if her daughter knew what she did. She said "No, I told her it died". I said "really?, did you know that Crystal and your daughter became good friends and I called her last night and told her what you did?" - she looked like she was about to faint. (the daughter was hysterical and angry as hell). She said "Oh My God!!!, you've probably ruined our relationship. I was just getting ready to call her". Then I said "look, stay the f--k away from me and my dog, don't ever call, and don't dare come knocking on my door. All I pray is that when you die, you die drowing like the hamster, you f'ing bitch". She was like a statue. I guess she was in shock. Usually i'm very mellow, quiet, friendly. I just walked away. Then I asked God to forgive me, but like I said people like that just bring out the worst in me.

P.S.: Thanks for those who shared their stories - it made me feel better to know that there are people who do love their animals and cherish them.

When I lived in Cyprus I saw some boys kicking a bag around and didn't think anything of it. As I got closer they ran off and I carried on regardless not a care in the world. Then the bag moved.
There was a little cat in it, bloody as all hell and hurt, so hurt. I took him to a vets to have him put down but he wasn't as badly hurt as I thought so I kept him. He was a gorgeous affectionate little ginger hooligan and I called him Leo. When I left Cyprus I found him a new home with some retired English people who lived there.
There was a huge feral cat problem in Cyprus when I was there and they handle it horribly. I heard many stories of people collecting a box full of cats and gassing them using the exhaust of a car. It really upset me.
English people are laughed at for our love of animals. Europeans sneeringly call us a nation of dog lovers. I don't have a problem with anyone not liking or wanting animals, I just have a problem with people who mistreat them and like you, I don't care who you are, I'll report you in a heartbeat.

I have 2 rescue dogs - one of which I 'stole' from a neighbour a few doors down after the people on either side heard the owners beating her with a vacuum. Took me all of 5 mins to jump a few back walls and take her after they'd left her outside for 3 days with no food or water at the height of summer. She is a greyhound/staffie cross and they didn't like it because she wouldn't bite or act tough!
We had to go through 18 months of police dog training to sort her out - we had to consider having her put down because she would go for us all the time. She's the best dog ever now and like yours, Purpley she responds to hand signals from 100 metres away.
Our 2nd - Chester was only 8 months when we got him in Sept and is as timid as a mouse. He's a greyhound. You can't cough without him cowering in the corner. It took 6 weeks for him to wag his tail after we brought him home. We have no idea what happened to him. He was found wandering on the beach. We took him to police school, but he was so timid he didn't do very well. He was scared of the agility course (which Ruby loves and is really good at!).
I'd have 10 more if I had the room. We got Chester as soon as we moved to a bigger house!
People should be forced to pay for beating up on animals that can't always fight back.

By the way, Emily, your dogs are beautiful. Greyhounds are beautiful. My ex-mother-in-law rescued one. She had a big yard and of course the dog was always out there running. She was so happy. Then her husband forgot to close the front gate one day and she escaped across to the woods. We never saw her again. We all prayed someone good found her and gave her a loving home.
