Thrown under the bus....
« on: Feb 10th, 2008, 9:41am »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

by my boss. I have a large project that is going on right now that is very high paced and very high pressure for everyone. The pressure got to my lead technician and he walked off of the job on Thursday.

The job was going along extremely well and ahead of schedule when my boss in his infinite 26 yr. old wisdom decided to take two people away from the lead technician. He said it would only be for two weeks, that was six weeks ago! and will not give them back to me because he is afraid of pissing off one of our other departments to whom he borrowed the two people to on a whim.

The technician had it hard enough by getting bitched at all the time by the General Contractor and then he does this?

You can't take a big job like that and keep switching people around, it just doesn't work and never has. I tried to explain this to him but (Everything is easy from the desk!) sarcasm.

I also have 3 other projects that should have been started already and I have been putting them off.

This is now according to him completely my fault. Never mind the fact that he took my people because I should have in his words "Been planning better"

I know he got bitched at from our manager about taking the guys from the job because now we have one happy customer (His) and three pissed off, when it could have been four happy customers had he consulted with me about the manpower issue in the first place.

I am now being micro-managed (Which I despise) by someone who has never had any field experience but knows how thing are supposed to run on the job site. I have 700 cables to test and 150 cubicles to fish wires through and put jacks on in a 2.5 week span which will involve a lot of overtime, but I'm still expected to make money as well.

I may be looking for a job tomorrow if he pisses me off because I would love to see the look on his face when I hand him my cell phone and say "I quit, you figure it out smart guy" Then maybe he'll have sleepless nights like I have had for the last week. I cannot sleep for more than 4 hours and usually wake up at 3 am. thinking about this mess and how to try to solve it.

Funny thing, why does he micro manage me during the week, but when I and 4 guys that I could scrape up worked our asses off for 11 hours yesterday he never even called to find out how things were going! WTF?

The beauty of it is that Barb is always 100% behind me in whatever decision I decide to make. I know I can have another job tomorrow if it comes to that.

This could not have happened at a worse time for me, my performance review is due in a few weeks, guess I won't be getting that 10G's I said I wanted. Oh well.

Sorry for the rant,

Sorry to hear Jimmers. Your boss sounds like he is about to get a rude awakening. Good to hear you are in demand and won't be out of work for long if you decide to tell him "take this job and shove it" Wink

Also nice to have Barb behind you 100% on this. thumb

Take it up a level to the manager.

I did Don, and he agreed that it is never a good idea to move guys around like that. In his words "That never works out" which I knew because I have been doing this a long time as has my manager. I emailed my manager last night and asked him to call me today so we can discuss this further. We'll see.

My immediate boss has been with the company for 4 years fresh out of college is of the mindset that guys are just a pair of hands and they are a dime a dozen, which he did say to me. I have a very good relationship with all of the technicians, hell we even talk to each other on the weekends but they do not like him from what they tell me.

Kind of ironic that the guy he was willing to let move on a week ago is the guy he now absolutely has to have now to keep his customer happy. The guy said he was moving on for more money, I was able to retain him by getting him more money but it was a struggle trying to convince my boss that the guy is worth every penny of what he was asking for and then some. Good people are VERY hard to come by, but he doesn't seem to realize this fact.

My guess is the manager will be having a little 1 on 1 discussion with the lad.

Everything always looks good on paper. Once a project gets rolling take the pper and put it in the shredder.

That's common these days....a lack of respect for the skills/knowledge of subordinates. When managers had to work their way up from the bottom you didn't have that attitude at the top.

three letters: "bcc"

when it comes to asking him to help you figure out how to better redistribute the resources required to do the job.

and on word: "forward"

his reply back to you to his manager.

when it comes to looking out for yourself you've got to do it yourself. A 26 y/o has no understanding of people needing to feed their families and keep jobs, and the "long term" for that matter. Screw him.

That's some good advice Scott.

Sorry this inexperienced jack-ass is screwing things up and looking for a scapegoat.  His boss needs to know what's going on and why.  Don't let him screw you over like this.

Good luck...

Gee Jimmers, you're thinking like a MAN!  What you really need to do is become his new best friend and HELP him.  Yeah that's right HELP him - give him advice from your experience -- just enough to sound feasible and screw him up royally. that should solve your problem. It'll show his incompetence - he'll get fired, you'll get your techs back and everyone will live happily ever after.  Wink
