Sell it or give it?

My boss is giving me his pool table (told y'all he's the best!) and we're moving the old  furniture out of the "family room" to storage and turning that room into a grown-up play room.

My son will be breaking my heart and moving out in 6-7 months. The question is:  should I sell the furniture to use the money for new stuff in the "new" room, or give it to the boy child? Or should I make him pay 1/2 the storage fee if he wants the furniture in 6-7 months?

Give your son the furniture, he won't be able to buy anything new by the time he needs to start paying rent and other bills and you probably won't get much selling it anyway..but if you want him to pay something maybe the storage rent would be a good thing...if he was my child I will not charge him anything but that is just me  Wink

Give him the pool table... then after he gets really good at playing pool and becomes a pool shark hustler... he'll be able to afford to buy you a new pool table, a house, a car, a vacation home, all the furniture you'll ever need and a storage facility.

But... that's just me.  Grin

BTW did I tell you I love you today?

Make him think you're going to sell it to him (at a good price), then surprise him by giving it to him when he's ready to write the check.

Then make him take you out to a nice dinner.

Rosy if you only knew how much other stuff he's going to be walking out of here with!  lol

$300 - $400 in storage fees may not be much to some, but for me its a lot to hang onto the furniture for several months till "whenever" he is ready for it.

Only other option is to NOT get the table, keep the furniture, then the boy has none and would still have to buy some, and I have no fun.  Undecided

Angie and I started out with nothing but a big old gas guzzling car and the clothes on our backs. Nobody helped us at all.

25 years later we will be watching the Bud Shootout on our HD 50inch Plazma TV. Bought and paid for with our own money.

It sure would have been nice to have some furniture when we were starting out but we did ok! Maybe sell him the furniture and do it on payments and put whatever money he gives you in the bank for him later.

Jen-

Not sure if you have more than one child.  If yes, divide it up and share.  (I got screwed and resent that my older sister got all the throw outs when I left home)  (didn't have shit except what I could build from scrap lumber)

6-7 months?  put it to the side, do what you can to suit the room to your needs, give the stuff to him then and then finish the job.  Seems like a plan that works for all.

If he's making a good wage, and you can't find cheaper storage, let him pay for the storage fees, or at least part of them.

Giving kids a hand- up, rather than a direct hand-out teaches them about real life, and real bills and real responsibility.

The ex and I agreed that I would "give" Dylan my old car.  He would pay for the parts to fix it up.  Dyl would have to earn the money to register it and get insurance.

The ex and I are helping out, but yl also has to hold up his end of the bargain.  No insurance or registration, it's not "his" car.

1/2 the storage fee if he wants the stuff later.

Then he'll be invested in the furniture at a fraction of the cost it would take to buy it.

Is "renting/with an option to buy" an option? After five long years of monthly payments... you can take the cash and pay for half of his schooling. Smiley and with the other half you can buy another pool table.

just another thought. Kiss

Perfect idea Brew. Gives him some responsibility and makes him save for his goal. Just when he has done his work, he'll get a great surprise !!!

The dinner is a nice way to celebrate too.
